Most Europeans I think would fall under the liberal category, as European politics tends to be a little more left-wing. The related connotations, such as being religious or hating homosexuals, tends also to be different. I'm probably a liberal myself, excepting one or two areas such as crime and punishment where I favour a much more right-wing approach.

So there are only two ways you can view things? Personally, I'm a mix and match kind of guy. There is no way that anyone can agree with everything their party says all of the time. I view things the way I view things and there is no party to describe what I believe. But I guess I am closest to a communist... I believe that it's silly that people think they have individual rights just because they were born in a certain country. I hate the fact that athletes can make billions by playing a sport, but janitors who work all night cleaning up crap that people are too lazy to throw away make minimum wage. I hate that people think they're entitled to everything. I hate how people spend thousands of dollars on baseball cards yet someone elsewhere starves to death because they can't afford something. I hate how people can be straight up kicked out of a hospital because they can't afford it. Money is useless and only causes corruption. And you know, I don't like freeloaders, but I would rather have someone get something they don't deserve (by the way, everyone gets what they don't deserve. Both you and I get much more than what we deserve.) than have people dying because they can't afford something.

So I guess I'm a communist... sorry for that rant, I get a little angry sometimes...

I find either extreme to be foolish.
I agree! extremes aren't usually the way to keep problems under control i myself am a libertarian, meaning i have democratic/liberal social views and republican/conservative fiscal beliefs
I just hate the party system in general. It makes it too easy for it to become about the competition between sides as apposed to a job that has to be done.

I'm financially conservative and socially liberal which I'm told makes me a libertarian.

Also when I say financially conservative I mean actually conservative, as in not spending money as opposed to Bush conservative, which is spending money on things that explode.

I used to be regarded as a right-winger until the Tea Party showed up and made me look like a cuddly liberal by comparison. Still very conservative, but Republican is a dirty word.

I consider my self a Moderate Centrist. Most my ideals fall in the middle, but I have beliefs that fall on both sides of the spectrum.

Your poll needs work.
There are two basic axes of politics nowadays. Social and fiscal. There are two ways of approaching each thing: Liberal (The government plays a big role) and Conservative (The government plays a small role)
Libertarian is conservative towards both.
Fascist is liberal towards both.
Democrats are fiscally liberal, and socially conservative.
Republicans are fiscally conservative, and socially liberal.
I myself am a Demmykat.
Republicans, socially liberal?
Despite sounding like it has to do with liberty, liberal just means a lot. As in a lot government control/intervention. Doing things like banning abortion and gay marriage and whatnot would be the government controlling aspects of your life, or being socially liberal.

Neither. I can't be liberal about everything or conservative about everything. I'm mostly liberal, but there are some things I think should be banned or outlawed etc....like purses for men. That's just retarded.

So I was wondering, for you American escapists, what are you? A liberal, or a conservative? Why? For those of you that aren't American, which side do you prefer in the political spectrum?

I'm kind of guessing that the majority of Escapists would be liberal, but that's just me. I myself am a conservative. As racist and ignorant as it may seem, I actually believed Bush could have done a lot worse, that it's about time we started doing something about illegal immigrants.

Oh, but Rush Limbaugh is still an idiot. That goes without saying, and he gives liberals excuses to call normal well thinking conservatives redneck retards because of the shit that spews out of his mouth.
I believe that Liberal and Conservative, just like Left and Right, are concepts which no longer have the meaning or relevance that they once did. The time for these concepts in human history has passed, and anyone on any side of the political spectrum who obsesses about these ideas is wasting their time, and everyone else's time, with outdated, irrelevant terminology which has no place in the 21st century's political landscape.

A politician who identifies as liberal/left or conservative/right is like a plumber who comes to your house to do a job and only brings half his toolbox with him. I'd kick him out and hire a genuine professional who brings ALL his tools.

I find it weird that the conservative party of Australia are known as the "Liberals" (The left-wing party is the Labor party).

OT: When I was younger, I deemed myself a right-wing person since I hated sharing (and taking from others) and asked myself why my parents paid the government to feed people who were too lazy to get a job. Then I grew up.
Now, I'm left-wing since I realise that the taxpayer's money is also spent on things like hospitals and (public- woot!) schools. And thus I feel that society can work better if all of its members support each other in one way or another.

Socialist.

...What? Don't give me that look. No, really, I am. I'm probably one of the few Texan Socialists in existence.

Liberal, but not to the extremes. I think neither is wrong unless you are extremely liberal / conservative. Those types piss me off.

Historically speaking I'm a liberal, in America today classical liberals are considered conservative, so that's what I answered. If you want to line me up with public figures, I'm very much a Goldwater/Buckley conservative, or a Glenn Beck conservative to make a more modern comparison.
