Way too many people in this thread seem to prefer eating raw mastadon in a cave somewhere. Digital all the way for me. I can't wait for an all-digital console generation. The time it would save me in never having to watch one of those horrible "pre-order this game from gamestop" commercials at the beginning of any video on gametrailers is reason enough to switch.

Getting rid of physical media won't do away with pre-orders. You'll be seeing "pre-install now" commercials.
I agree, but a pre-order in that case would com straight from either the developer or the platform. Not from Gamestop. Do you rememeber that horrible "Dance Russians, Dance!" thing? Or the one from ME2 with the toilet? Or the one for Halo: Reach with fifteen seconds of flexing? We'd NEVER HAVE TO SEE THOSE AGAIN.

While I wish I could switch entirely to digital delivery, it's simply not possible to get high-speed internet in many rural areas.
Thus, I cannot support the move over to digital delivery.

To answer the topic question: Whenever I get my new computer built, I will more than likely switch from physical copies of games to Steam. I'll still buy physical copies since I'll still have an Xbox 360.

For games, yes. I love Digital Distribution, for movies/books/silverware, I prefer a physical disc/bundle of sheets/suitcase of gilted forks and knives.
this man speaks the truth.

for dvds/bluerays and books = fast on the go things i can pop in and watch/read.

for games and whatnot, digital is awesome, especially on steam where there is little chance of you being screwed over, only possibility is if you have a super shoddy internet connection.

i do love my discs, i do, but economically and logically digital is the way to go, then i can flash drive the hell out of everything.

I already "ditched discs" for new purchases except for the collector version of two games, and so far, I don't regret it given nowadays, boxed versions contain nothing anymore: many times they don't even bother to have a manual anymore :(

On the other hand, I would be sad to lose the lovely discs for the 3-cd version of Beyond Good & Evil which has nice concept art of Jade.

...what? I don't even....

Are you trying to make some sort of point?

Why in the world wouldn't I want a setup where new games that are released are all available straight from the console. No dealing with shipping fees or going to the store, easier rental deals and agreements, overall cheaper prices (we hope), and above all else more space in my house. I own over 50 different games for the current gen. That's not counting older stuff. My entertainment center only has so much space.

For the record, I'm also in favor of the digital copies of movies that have started coming with some BluRays. I throw them on a drive on my computer and stream them to the XBox or PS3, no need to sort through discs anymore.

No way. I'll take a physical copy over a digital one every day of the week.

By personal experience, digital distribution is more trouble than it's worth. I'm locked out of my Steam games while they sort out some mess that they refuse to clarify for me, and all that's done is throw me off the PC and into consoles for good.

So until then, I'll just take the copies I know are stored in my drawers, rather than rely on some software somewhere, thank you very much.

I'll be buying discs for a good long while into the forseeable future. But this is coming from a guy who still buys albums and has barely downloaded any music online. I just like having the psyical copy in my hand. It means it's mine to do whatever the fuck I want with it. I'll buy downloadable titles if forced but if possible I want a psyical copy.

My main issue with digital downloads is that it forces me to rely on the company who made the game for extra copies later. Let's say I get sick of a game, uninstall it, go on with my life, then years down the road I decide to play it again? The company is under no obligation to keep access to that game on their servers, so I'll be SOL if I haven't already burned a copy.

At least with purchasing physical disks from a gaming store, my personal copy looks pretty. I am damn glad the boxes have gotten thinner, though. I don't know what they were thinking with thick plastic boxes for PC games.

Its good, but will never replace physical copies, like those "e-book" devices will never replace actual books. Or debit cards will never replace cash. Like what Blizzard does is a good example, you can buy their game in the store, register it on their site, then if u ever lose the CD, u can just download the game from their site.

Its nice, and it will help, but never will replace.

I love Hard copy discs far too much to ever fully switch over. I like to collect game boxes with cool artwork on it, not to mention the collectors editions of games that have all sorts of goodies in them that CANT exist other than in the physical realm in which we live. I also feel more comfortable knowing that nothing will take my game away due to some stupid digital decision made/controlled by a company that I have no way of influencing or interacting to prevent it.

I have a lot of trust with Steam, and I DO have a fair few games on my account. but my downloads with that system are few and far between.

so yea...discs are by far my preference, and i don't see that changing in the foreseeable future.

Been ready to do that ever since all the direct download sites and services.

In my country it's commonplace stores will charge you more than twice the release price of popular games and rarely ever carry non mainstream titles. Hell, if Atlus somehow re released its PS2 catalogue as PC ports I'll buy every one of them.

Digital download is what I hope will become the future standard.

Scary stuff is going to happen when we make the move from discs to just downloadable media. Since piracy is very very easy with downloadable media, DRM is going to get ramped up like crazy (We've only scratched the surface of harsh DRM).

Games, sure... More convenient way to store it, don't have to worry about losing/breaking the disc, even though download time could be a pain. Music, hell no. Digital download music is a huge ripoff.
