I'm sure this word is making it's umpteenth appearance here: repetition. If I could have skipped the identical tower climbing and go straight to the target assassinations, it would have been great. But there's no way I can look past all that fluff. There was a huge portion of the game where I was just not enjoying myself. The lack of characterization and terrible voice acting for Altair didn't help either.

Thankfully, the second game addressed most of my problems with the first.

I found AC1 to be quite repetitive as I progressed further in the plot. But, regardless of this, I still enjoyed playing it.

I enjoyed AC1 it wasn't ENTIRELY new, but it did things pretty damn well. It also paved a path for AC2 and all the improvements that came with it.

Assassins Creed 1 was Win. Assassin's Creed 2 was full on Awesome Cakes. AC: Brotherhood? I shall wait with baited breath.

AC1 was both a fantastic, yet [kinda] boring game. Boring because of the repetiveness. Gather information. Kill. Gather information. Kill. etc etc.

However AC2 was much better game, with all the extras like the glyphs.

If the poll question was "which is better, AC1 or AC2?" I'd definately say AC2 :)

Win.
Even though the game had some problems, (repetitiveness, combat, water was fucking deadly) AC felt like a breath of fresh air in gaming IMO.

Fail. Fail. Fail.

I dunno, I just hated it, the jumping, the hiding and the fact that I couldn't ride my fucking horse through country side without attracting attention. Because anyone who rides there horse faster than a walk is of course an assassin!

On its own as a game AC1 did stand up like a drunk paper cut-out, but as both a technical achievement and a daring step towards originality it was a crowning achievement.

Plus, like Yahtzee said, running from a bazillion guards in AC1 was honestly harrowing, wheras in AC2 the guards will let you off the hook if you so much as turn your collar up. XD

Christ, I guess there's a first for everything.

OT: Win-ish. I enjoyed it, I just wish they'd reached the AC2 style in AC1.

I love the plot too; greatly original and interesting. It also craps on religion a fair bit, which I won't object too.

I enjoyed it. It's not my favorite, but I enjoyed it.

And! unlike most people, one of my favorite parts of the game was the combat! I think the main problem most people had is that they weren't aggressive enough to make it fun. Yes, sitting there blocking and pushing the counter button when the strike comes is definitely the easiest way to win a fight, but it's also the most tedious as well as the slowest. Quite frankly, I never let up the attack, constantly pushing for combos, blocking (and countering) when I saw an attack coming from behind, throwing knives at distant people, grabbing and throwing people into each other, (and assassinating at least one of them on the ground), and pretty much everything else I could think of. Now, you may have noticed, in order to do that, I would have to switch weapons fairly often, and would rarely be in the defensive stance. This means I was a lot more open, and most definitely took a lot more hits (and subsequent deaths) than the average "counter->counter->counter" player, but once I got good at it and there were large groups of enemies to fight against (as was true at the end of the game, on both counts), I became a devastating whirlwind of death. It was beautiful to watch, required skill to execute, and finished fights quickly, all things which were very much a blessing. I would sometimes go out of my way to piss off guards.

On the other hand, the stealth aspects appealed to me greatly. There was nothing I found more satisfying than approaching and executing a target entirely undetected.

All that said however, discounting the main assassination missions, the game as a whole was very repetitive, and the story (of Desmond) was annoying and unnecessary.

So like I said: I enjoyed the game, but it's not one of my favorites. The second was substantially better, but still had it's share of flaws.

Haven't played the second yet, but the first one is one of my favourite games of all time. It was new, it was shiny, it was repetitive... wait, that's not good! Anyway, the Altair part was great, the Desmond part sucked, but fortunately this was short.
Of course, the unskippable video sequences sucked big times, but the parts in between made up for that.

Speaking of which, I think I should install AC2 sometimes...

I liked it. AC1 was a good game but it was broken in places. AC2 worked on them and was a big general improvement on AC1. However for both games I was promised stealth which is what I also come to expect from most assassination games. These games however are in no way stealthy.

I liked Assasin's Creed. After it got going it was really good. The ending and side missions were soooooo boring though, I mean it was the same 3 or 4 missions over again and the ending, what the fuck was that! There was no stealth or badass parkour, it was just quicktime event after quick time event.
