I played competitive hockey until I was 17, when injuries got the best of me.
Also some soccer in the summer when I was younger, and not at a hockey conditioning camp.

After that I boxed, and played rugby in highschool.

For me, and most of my friends that game, we all did it because we were athletes.
Growing up, you can't stay up late when you've got to travel for a hockey game the next day, and can't go out anywhere when you've got practice in another two hours.

Getting older, you can't go out hanging out on the streets till 3 in the morning, or drinking everyday when you have your other commitments.

It was always the way to kill the time in between sports, because you don't have time for anything else, or are too tired to do anything else.

I think the "athlete gamer" makes up a significant portion of the community... just have no idea how much.

These days I've matured into a "economic gamer".
I save money by staying in and playing video games, as opposed to going out on the town.
My university days are over, I've got student debt, and am also burdened by the realisation that there is more to life than going out drinking all the time..... and I'm getting older and experiencing terrific hangovers.

Gaming gives me something to do, keeps me out of the bars, and my beer and gin money in my bank account where it belongs.

I'm an archer at heart. I shoot every day and give cheap (nearly free) lessons.
I'm also box at my local gym twice a week, and I'm something of a traceur (if we're considering that to be a sport. I personally don't.)

Currently, I'm just working out daily, weight lifting, cardio and core stuff. Just trying to keep in good shape. I'm planning on going out for my school's club basketball team next semester (I'm 6' 7" so hopefully my height will give me an advantage.) I'm also looking at either boxing, or Savate or Muay Thai, the only problem is the boxing gym nearest me in Boston is facking expensive, though it's probably extremely good.

I'm a Traceur, hate saying that though because nobody knows what I'm talking about - In other words I do Parkour.

I also hate the weedy gamer stereotype, most of my friends play sports and play games!

Hmm lets see sports: (sometimes I practiced more then one sport at a time)
Basketball for a year
Boxing for a few years
Archery for a year
MMA for a few months
And now I've been fencing for a couple of years and of course when not practicing some sport I hit the gym a couple of times a week and even while practicing I lift weights every now and then.

And despise all that I'm not in a good enough shape. I'm strong yeah but I'm not as skinny as I would like to be, not fat but not thin enough. Average I guess.

Not counting the sports before HS (pretty much a different one every year, with basketball numerous years)...

Well, in high school I swam and did marching band (it counts, trust me, it counts). Currently, I'm doing shotokan karate and generally working out.

I despise sports, but walking, weight-lifting, and swimming are all good workouts that I do when I can.

I can't stand people who play sports.

But the majority of society hates people who play videogames, so the hatred is mutual.
Wow, what society do you live in? Because where I live, videogames are one of the top forms of recreation.

Sixty-five percent of American households play computer or video games.
Sixty-three percent of parents believe games are a positive part of their children?s lives.
U.S. computer and video game software sales grew six percent in 2007 to $9.5 billion dollars.

Looks like it's just you hating the jocks.

Which incidentally would include me. I played American football, basketball, baseball, wrestled, boxed, fenced, track & field (mostly 'field' and not 'track' tho :p ). I would like to think that I did them at very high levels, but I'm not going to spout off about my accomplishments. All that while playing video games and D&D (or GURPS, later) almost every weekend.

Personally, I think videogames stopped being thought of as only for scrawny wimps/fat nerds awhile ago. The stereotype is almost laughable these days.

Debate and Forensics got me before any sport could. Then came NHS, Choir, Theater, Academic Team, etc.

Never had time for a sport.
