I am a bassist. I think it takes a different ear and set of skills to play the bass well. Trust me I've heard plenty of guitarists "just pick up the bass," and it sounds like Barry White dying.

But other's may disagree.

So what do you guy's think? Any stricktly bassist (or bassist as main intrument) in the house?

(Btw those are bass and guitar noises)

It's as much a separate instrument as the violin and the cello.

I'd say it's still a cousin, but it's a distant cousin. Similar concept, different implementation.

I'm a bassist! I'd say it was it's own instrument, but it depends on how the bass is used really. It can be, should be (in my opinion), and often is it's own special thing, basically

I started off as a bass player for about 3 years, then I started playing Guitar and have been using it as my main instrument for another 3 years until now, and to be totally honest I don't see a whole mess of difference. I mean yes of course, the bass is irreplacable in a common rock band or the like, but I only see different techniques and sound coming out of the guitar.

I think I have a large array of instrument knowledge, I've played Piano since I was 12, and I play the drums often. I even played Violin for just short of a year, although it's rather depressing with the lack of skill I obtained in it. (I suck with Violin)

All in all I do see your point, mainly when guitarists will pick up a bass and because they can automatically play some "Ch00nz" on it they think bass is easier, seen as though it has 4 strings. I mean personally I think the bass is harder, but most guitarists are erm, how do I say it? Wankers.

PS. Don't ask why I capitalized Violin. There... I did it again.

Bass players are almost always the member of the band who no-one remembers. Can anyone remember the main bassist for Queen's name? (without using google) Exactly.

But yeah I respect anyone who can play a musical instrument above the flute because I damn well can't.

Keep up the good work bass players, you're only 2 strings away from being real muscians.

I'm just playin', I love it really.
