I think it's underrated. One of the best games I've played in quite a while. It's genius. Especially the Scarecrow sequences. It's not a game for kids that's for sure.

I would normally agree with you guys saying that this game is overhyped, but the big difference is the game actually deserved the hype, for once the media has given out there usual 10 out of 10 made up rating that they give every Tom, Dick or Harry with money and the game turned out to be great. If you are asking for a reason as to why it is so good, to answer simply it was just a well made game, the combat, detective work, boss fights and riddler challanges each provided me with a lot of entertainment. I always tell people not to listen to the hype the media puts out because it actually spoils a game, if you still don't like it that is fine you are not in the minority.

You buy products because of their reviews? Dear god...
Sorry. I'll just go tell the Escapist staff their jobs aren't needed and they should quit their jobs.

Holy crap, does my opinion matter that much?! Could you tell them to bring me a sandwitch on their way home?

I'm playing through it right now and enjoying the hell out of it. It's a great game and deserves every accolade it receives.

No, it's not perfect, but what game is? It's about as close to perfection as any game can come, I reckon...

Let's just run down the list of what Batman: Arkham Asylum gets right:

Excellent story & voice acting.
Excellent graphics & art direction.
Superb blend of stealth & action game play.
Free-flow combat is simply amazing, and that's not an adjective I toss around lightly...
Item collection that doesn't feel "tacked-on" or out of place.
Makes you feel like a bad-ass ninja-genius.

Most games are lucky if they get one or two of these things right, but AA manages to pull them all off...

Nope, it is the first good Batman game we have had in the last decade.
Howabout "ever"? I can't remember any good Batman games in the last ten years or beyond... Some of the SNES games were ok, but nothing that compares to AA....

What I like is that while, yes, there is a "Bane type," this is contextualized in the story. Dini did a good job.

You're right, I'm totally immature for making you click on a box in order to see an insult. Besides, the text's to big to leave it out of concealment to be honest.

I agree, the visuals were beautiful, so were the cities and the story was pretty engaging. Sadly, the gameplay was just plain shit.

It's not the box that's immature, it's what's in the box. Don't dodge the point.

Yes, I believe that that game was awesome and deserved most of it's praise.

That being said, are you telling me that you when a reviewer uses the terms "It's the closest to perfection a video game is" or "masterpiece" you actually take them seriously?

People that played it said stuff like, "It's the closest to perfection a video game is". Of course, I realise it's probally just a gap in opinion. I'm sure I'm just weird or something for not liking this "masterpiece".
If you honestly go by those one line summaries that reviews give, you are in for some major disappointment on a lot of games, movies, and books. If you really want to know what a reviewer thinks about a game, you have to actually read/watch the review.

The reviews were spot-on. It doesn't deserve straight aces only because of those annoying boss battles, but other than that it's a brilliant game. My choice for Game of the Year for sure.

Combat could have been better. It was as if Batman took the player's button presses as suggestions and figured he'd get around to it. He just responded too slowly. Then there are the bullshit enemies, the ones with knives and stun batons that for some reason, despite years of martial arts training, Batman can't figure out where to hit them on their body without them blocking.

Very well then, I shouldn't have used insults in order to deal with your point and just do what I did in my last post, I.E. say why I did not consider AC1 to barely even be close to a decent game.

I apologize.

Yes I think it's a great game 8ish/10. I thought the combat was really cool with a lot of "Oh Shit! How is that guy still alive moments?!" The sneaking around and knocking out the guards or "stealth-fucking" as a friend of mine phrased it was a blast! I also got a lot of enjoyment out of doing the puzzles and collecting the interview tapes. However the only main complaint I had were how pitiful and uncreative most of the boss fights were. The only one that I enjoyed was the battle against Poison Ivy. In closing it is a very enjoyable and well-rounded game that is sadly marred by poorly conceived boss fights.

I definitely think it deserved most of the praise it got. It did have repetitious enemies and boss fights, but I enjoyed the running around, solving the riddles, and just being Batman enough for it to me amazing in my books.
