Microbrews whenever possible for me, local ones preferrably.

Also, the difference between lager and ale (which bitters among other great kinds of beers are) is that the are made differently, and incidentally, having had some Czech lagers, I'm not going to ellaborate.

Also also, I'm slightly annoyed by the assumption that everyone on the internet is american made by the author of the thread.

Non-alcholic FTW

Yes, I am that lame. But there is this awesome stuff from M&S (its a chain in the UK) called 'Softbrew' which is brewed fruit juice so it tastes malty but isn't bitter or alcholic (dur)

I choose lager then ale then beer.
Didn't quite understand that, both lager and ale are types of beer. So saying you prefer lager or ale to beer doesn't make sense.
They taste different, there are things I wouldn't call ale or lager like John Smiths, I'd just call that beer. There are a few things where I wouldn't call sub genres exactly the same as I'd call the over all genre.

I also said I'm sat here with Carlsberg so if I made sense through typing I'd be quite happy.
Fair enough.
John Smiths is I believe a Bitter, which is technically a type of ale. Normally weaker than other ales but more heavily hopped than other weaker ales such as Milds. John Smiths, while being perfectly fine, is far from the best that Bitters can offer.
I'm sat here with Hobgoblin.
I don't like John Smiths, but I don't generally drink beer/ale. My Grandad is currently educating me about what is good and I've been to a load of beer festivals with him and bar tended a few, I just never remember anything but the stuff you can get in supermarkets in the long run.

I've had some really nice ales and beers though, I just wish I could remember the names of them because I'm drunk by the time I find anything I really like. That might have something to do with why I like it though...
So if you have any recommendations I'll most likely check them out seeing as I'll have them down in writing.

As the other guy said bitters being called beer, that seems to be exactly how I categorise everything.

Hobgoblin, Guinness, Goliath, Old Speckled Hen, and so on.
Where those are on the list, I don't know. I'm not a fan of American beer :/

Ah, Spitfire, my favourite non-Yorkshire beer. Old Peculiar and Black Sheep are better though.
