Personally I would argue that "punk" is not a genre. But I digress.
Top 5 bands?

Joint first - Green Day, Rise Against, System of a Down
4th - Bon Jovi
5th - MCR

Band of the year? as the only one of the above to release a record, Green Day win by default I guess...

please don't kick me

My favourite three has to be:
Billy Talent
Arctic Monkeys
Rise Against

Alot of other bands come after though, like:
Queens of the stone age
Muse
Nirvana
Disturbed
Wolfmother
Foo Fighters
Gluecifer

Best band of the year has to be Them Crooked Vultures, the more I listen to them the more I love them!

My favorite genre is indie or alternative or whatever you want to call it.

Top five bands:
The New Pornographers
Belle and Sebastian
Ted Leo and the Pharmacists
The Shins
The White Stripes

I don't really know what you mean by "favorite band of the year", but my favorite album of 2009 year is Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix by Phoenix.

In order: Radiohead, Oasis, Alice in Chains, Metallica and finally Megadeth.
The ones who did not make the list were: Muse, Interpol, Nirvana, Nightmare, Audioslave, Iron Maiden and August Burns Red.
With that said, I have trouble choosing between Rock and Metal.

I'm an old school ****** who hates most modern music. I like old school metal, metal that actually has a tune and isn't just some guy growling and strumming two loud notes telling the story about raping a baby with a severed penis (And I'm not just making a tasteless joke there, I've heard a depressingly popular song about that...) so that basically means the metal I do like is stuff like Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, AC/DC, Def Leppard, some Metallica, etc. But my favourite genre is good ol' fashioned psychadelia. It's hard to narrow down a list of top 5s, so here's a top 10 instead.

10: Electric Light Orchestra. El Dorado, Time, Discovery, Elo 1/2.... great memories. Too bad that crappy Xanadu movie killed them :(

9: Queen. Oh come on, what being on this earth DOESN'T like Queen?

8: Ayumi Hamasaki. A MAJOUR guilty pleasure. I normally detest female J-pop bands (Or really any j-pop bands, although there is some good J-Rock..) but rather than doing speed and bouncing off the wall squealing like a maniac exposing lethal amounts of horrifying wanna be cuteness she actually has a gorgeous voice and some of her music is actually very well composed. "M" for example is incredible. She's also a looker, perfect eyes and hair :)

7: Muse. They are one of the few modern American bands I like. Plus their video for "Hysteria" is awesome because it pays tribute to the GREATEST MOVIE EVARR

6: Red Hot Chilli Peppers. This is one of the few American bands post 80's I actually like. My brother got me into them, and I bloody love the Stadium Arcadium album.

5: The Who. They are The Who. I need not say anymore. Like Queen, everyone loves them.

4: Voltaire. The violin is my favourite instrument, and its his primary instrument. He's also funny, has a good voice, and churns out beautiful songs with a large variety of tunes.

3: The Moody Blues. WHY DOESN'T ANYONE IN THE 21ST CENTURY KNOW THESE GUYS?!?!? THEY ARE FUCKING INCREDIBLE!! Especially after a healthy dose of marijuana. It's the most relaxing experience ever and comes close to sex in terms of pleasure. In fact maybe sometime we should mix the three.. hmm....

2: The Pillows. As I said I'm not into J-pop, but there are good J-Rock bands out there and The Pillows are the top. I'm so damn glad that FLCL became popular in the states because that means my wife & I would no longer be the only people in the country that know these dudes. I've listened to them since '97, when I first met Chie and befriended her. When I went into her house they had the "Please Mr. Lostman" disc playing and I fell in love. Seen these blokes in concert several times too, I even went on a road trip to see them in California. It was sweet seeing a GOOD Japanese band come to the states, seeing as the only other one I've seen here is Puffy Ami Yumi.. *shudder*

1. PINK. FUCKING. FLOYD. There is nothing in this universe greater than Pink Floyd, and anyone who says otherwise will be sentenced to a terrible fate by Judge Arse. Not only did they make the BEST MOVIE EVARRR (The Wall) they also did Echoes, which is the best non-classical piece of music ever written.

Top 5 is hard to choose.

HIM
Nightwish (Preferably before the vocalist change from Tarja Turunen to Annette Olzen)
Sonata Arctica
Ludo
The Mountain Goats

Honorable mention includes Dream Theater, Cradle of Filth, and The After Midnight Project, who periodically switches out with Ludo and The Mountain Goats.

My band of the year probably goes to... The After Midnight Project or Dream Theater. Both bands had great albums come out this year. AMP released their first actual album, giving me more to listen to than their EP and bootlegs. And Dream Theater finished up the Alcoholic Anonymous Twelve Step Suite, which, when listened to in completion, might be my favorite musical experience to date.

Band of the year?

The Yeah Yeah Yeahs put out It's Blitz! which is a pretty great album all around. Definitely my album of the year, and you've got Karen O channeling old school Siouxsie Sioux every time she gets the chance (which is just terrific in my opinion). Nobody else has the pop sensibilities that these folks seem to have these days. And this album is worlds better than their last one, which was abit flaccid when compared to their first album.

Karen O continues to be just an amazing performer. So yeah. Yeah. Yeah.

Band of the Year Award goes to Spinnerette because I adore Brody Dalle <3.
I'm curious if you feel that the Spinnerette stuff really compared favorably to the old Distillers stuff.

Honest question, the first single turned me off so much that I really haven't gotten around to checking out the whole album yet. I really should though. I've just been broken hearted by too many bands as of late.

Certainly in no specific order. The Reason: THESE BANDS KICK SO MUCH ASS THEY CAN EASILY MAKE YOU GO BLIND!

Your poll is flawed.

PunkYou put on rock and then four subgenres of it. You might as well have asked, "What's your favorite kind of rock?"

My favorite bands:

1. Wynton Kelly Trio
2. The Who
3. Santana
4. Freddie Hubbard
5. Wes Montgomery
