I'm an old school ****** who hates most modern music. I like old school metal, metal that actually has a tune and isn't just some guy growling and strumming two loud notes telling the story about raping a baby with a severed penis (And I'm not just making a tasteless joke there, I've heard a depressingly popular song about that...) so that basically means the metal I do like is stuff like Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, AC/DC, Def Leppard, some Metallica, etc. But my favourite genre is good ol' fashioned psychadelia. It's hard to narrow down a list of top 5s, so here's a top 10 instead.
10: Electric Light Orchestra. El Dorado, Time, Discovery, Elo 1/2.... great memories. Too bad that crappy Xanadu movie killed them
9: Queen. Oh come on, what being on this earth DOESN'T like Queen?
8: Ayumi Hamasaki. A MAJOUR guilty pleasure. I normally detest female J-pop bands (Or really any j-pop bands, although there is some good J-Rock..) but rather than doing speed and bouncing off the wall squealing like a maniac exposing lethal amounts of horrifying wanna be cuteness she actually has a gorgeous voice and some of her music is actually very well composed. "M" for example is incredible. She's also a looker, perfect eyes and hair
7: Muse. They are one of the few modern American bands I like. Plus their video for "Hysteria" is awesome because it pays tribute to the GREATEST MOVIE EVARR
6: Red Hot Chilli Peppers. This is one of the few American bands post 80's I actually like. My brother got me into them, and I bloody love the Stadium Arcadium album.
5: The Who. They are The Who. I need not say anymore. Like Queen, everyone loves them.
4: Voltaire. The violin is my favourite instrument, and its his primary instrument. He's also funny, has a good voice, and churns out beautiful songs with a large variety of tunes.
3: The Moody Blues. WHY DOESN'T ANYONE IN THE 21ST CENTURY KNOW THESE GUYS?!?!? THEY ARE FUCKING INCREDIBLE!! Especially after a healthy dose of marijuana. It's the most relaxing experience ever and comes close to sex in terms of pleasure. In fact maybe sometime we should mix the three.. hmm....
2: The Pillows. As I said I'm not into J-pop, but there are good J-Rock bands out there and The Pillows are the top. I'm so damn glad that FLCL became popular in the states because that means my wife & I would no longer be the only people in the country that know these dudes. I've listened to them since '97, when I first met Chie and befriended her. When I went into her house they had the "Please Mr. Lostman" disc playing and I fell in love. Seen these blokes in concert several times too, I even went on a road trip to see them in California. It was sweet seeing a GOOD Japanese band come to the states, seeing as the only other one I've seen here is Puffy Ami Yumi.. *shudder*
1. PINK. FUCKING. FLOYD. There is nothing in this universe greater than Pink Floyd, and anyone who says otherwise will be sentenced to a terrible fate by Judge Arse. Not only did they make the BEST MOVIE EVARRR (The Wall) they also did Echoes, which is the best non-classical piece of music ever written.
