I really liked Tom Waits Glitter and Doom CD that came out in 2009 so I guess he's my favorite artist of the year.

Metal, for me. But this really needs clarification. The differences between softcore metal (Rammstein, Slipknot, Static X, Cannibal Corpse, etc) and hardcore metal (Emperor, The Project Hate MCMXCIX, Sanctification, Dark Funeral, etc) are huge. And this doesn't include Heavy Metal, which is a class itself. I prefer the darker, more hardcore flavor.

I guess I'd have to go with rock as a "favorite," as most music I like falls under it as an umbrella term (i.e. it encompasses a lot of genres).

Top five bands are tough, but assuming "band of the year" means favorite new artist, I'd have to go hands down with "fun." If you ever listened to The Format (which admittedly, I didn't), it's their lead singer's new band. Shameless, poppy goodness.

Clicked Punk, but Punk/Alternative would be better. Good punk pushes boundaries, and tests expectations. That's kinda the point. My personal tastes include everything from the Ramones and Iggy Pop through to Conflict and Black Flag to The Dresden Dolls and Fugazi.
Also a lot of the Heavy Metal and Rock classics like Motorhead, The Rolling Stones and Black Sabbath.
Essentially, I like music with balls.
