I have to say, Catcher in the Rye is one of the better books I've read lately, and the best book I've ever been assigned by an English class that I hadn't already read (which exempts 1984).

Looking at the wide variety of other books that people have been forced to read, from authors ranging from Tolkien to Ayn Rand, I feel that my English classes have been rather vanilla. Well, I've known that for a long time now. I wish some of those teachers would have assigned us books outside of the usual lot, but it seems that the profession of teaching English doesn't really appeal to people who like to challenge the system.

To Kill A Mocking Bird. It's probably not the best book I've ever read, but leaves all the other books I've been forced to read in the dust.

One Hundred Years of Solitude was probably my favorite forced to read book. Oddly enough, I have a degree in English Lit, but got out of reading most of the "classics" by careful class planning. Skipped on Moby Dick, The Great Gatsby, On Walden Pond and a few others that would probably make most people scream that I know nothing. However, I got the degree because I love language, not writing, so I will leave reading things I don't enjoy to others.

I don't think a poll is called for, since there are simply too many options.

I.E. Where the HELL is Lord of the Flies?

But I'll be nice and vote other. ^_^
sucks to your asmar!
i sometimes say that randomly to people.... they get quite confused.
but i would have to say that a book i had to read for english:satire class was one of the best books i was "forced" to read; sunshine sketches of a little town by Stephen Leacock.

THe Shipping News, by Annie Proulx. It doesn't take much to get me to read, but I don't think I would have persevered with this one if I didn't have to. The writing style was choppy and kind of clunky. Now Annie Proulx is one of my fav authors. (Point of reference, she wrote the book "brokeback mountain".)

I am rarely forced to read, infact i love to read on my own free will! *gasp*

Anyway i was forced to read by Of Mice and Men by Steinbeck. (My old english teacher forced me to read, infact im sure all of our english teacher's forced us to read)

Thought it was really well put together, flowed nicely, and the ending was superb...

For those who have not read it, the main character George is a ballsy man...

I refuse to use the "Other" option, on general principles (if I used it, I'd recommend "Bless Me, Ultima").

It was a toss-up between To Kill a Mockingbird and my physics textbook (I'm a huge nerd). Ultimately, Scout wins out.

subject says it all. What is the best book you were forced to read? and why (if you care to add that). The books listed are alot of the ones I was forced to read. Note: you are not limited to narratives, you can also choose text books.

Mine is The Great Gatsby. I liked how it was presented from a third person view but not the omnipotent viewer. I liked all the metaphors in it and it seemed to wrap up well.
new best frieeeeend. i love the great gatsby. that english class pretty much defined my highschool career. i don't think i learned more from any class than i did from that 11th grade english class. :D

You might be right. They both have some parallels. But I couldn't say for sure, it's been sometime since ye olde high school.

I wasn't Forced Per-se' to read 1984, but I hold it as one of my favorite books.
Also, Big Brother is not watching you.
Or is he?

I'm in much the same situation as you. I was not forced to read it in particular, but I was forced to read a number of books presented on a list, and 1984 was one of them. I love that book. If I ever have kids, that will be the first book they read.

I truly loved 1984, so much so that when it was assigned reading (an assignment that was to last for 4 weeks or so) I read the entire thing cover to cover that same day.
