I am going to have to go with childhood and stick with 7. It was the first one of the games I played, and it's always stuck with me the most, even after playing a good portion of the series. However, I do wish there was a button that said I loved all of the games. Each of them has their own little quirks and bits that make them unique and fun to play.

Once more I see a "Best Final Fantasy Game" - thread, and once more I say IX.

IX gave the player a gigantic, immersive world to get lost in. Newer games give you a corridor. Besides, the more science-fictiony the series becomes, the more sterile and bland the games tend to feel. I like the traditional medieval setting. I also like the upbeat, carefree and optimistic attitude of main man Zidane - especially after trying to slog through VIII while dragging moody douchebag Squall along.

Oh - and the MUSIC!

Also OP, I'll be amazed if you receive any explained votes for FFII. Have you played II (by which I absolutely do not mean IV, which is a great game)?
I was thinking the same thing FFII is easily the worst FF game I have ever played and I have finished them all (main series) except XI and XIV which I never intend to play being MMOS (also havent started XIII-2 yet) its just got nothing good about it if I wasnt bored out of my mind and hell bent on completing the series I never would have bothered persevering with that broken heap of garbage, I suppose it gave us moogles but im not a huge fan of them.

Anyway best FF imo is FFVII by a mile nothing else came close after that it would be VI and X second then IV third then the rest with XII and II at the bottom but II quite a way below XII.

Final Fantasy IX.

One of the Greatest Games Ever. And yes, it deserves all that capitalisation.

I have to say, probably if it hadn't been for a combination of Lara Croft and Final Fantasy IX I wouldn't still be playing videogames today, and then none of you would have the joy of my company.

And that would be terrible.

They all suck.

Boring Garbage Anime style pink JRPG games.
That's nice. Ignorance is always good for a laugh.

OP: X is my favorite, personally. Great combat and character development systems, and I really enjoyed the story. Also, 'To Zanarkand' is a freaking great song. They're all fantastic games, though.

My favorite is X-2 with twelve and 6 not far behind. In a series this large with so many different mechanics it's hard to find one that stands above the rest.

X had the best combat system and the grid system was awesome for making all around great charcters.

Final Fantasy VI, of the ones I've played it's definitely the only one I love, specially the GBA version, since it goes with me anywhere it gives me more incentive to finish it since I tend to not finish RPGs, though I still haven't finished it, it's definitely the one that's held my interest the longest, though considering how much I love Tactics Ogre I really should play FF Tactics, wouldn't be surprised if that becomes my new favourite, and though I liked Tactics Advance the law system was greatly annoying to me, not to mention I found it more grindy than Tactics Ogre.

But seriously FF VI is damn good, and everyone that says they all suck clearly hasn't played it, I mean even if you don't like it I'm pretty sure nobody would say that it's a terrible game, the atmosphere is great, the characters are likeable and interesting and for the most part well developed, the music is just undeniably fantastic, even though it's a 16-bit game it still looks pretty damn good and has a lot of personality, I mean there's nothing about it that you could say it's terrible, you can say you don't like it but it's most definitely not a bad game.

My personal favorite Final Fantasy is IX. I played the game about two years ago after playing through VII for the first time. (which was also a great game)

I can honestly say I was blown away from the very start of this game. Most RPG's I've played had pretty slow beginnings. But for some reason, this game's beginning got me hooked. From playing a socially awkward black mage exploring a city, performing a play to kidnap the princess, I haven't even got into a real battle in the game yet and I was already in love with the game.

And of course when I did get into the meat of the game, I really got into the game's battle system which made it so that you don't immediately wear the next best piece of equipment if you want to learn an ability.

The story and characters were all fantastic as well. From the upbeat skirtchaser Zidane, the shy little black mage Vivi, the grumpy and overprotective knight Steiner, and so many other memorable characters.

Granted, the game wasn't perfect, there were some pretty annoying segments in the game. Including one particular minigame which involved not being seen by a hungry creature that's TRAPPED IN A CAGE. Of course those are just minor grievances.

By the time the game was over, I felt an immense satisfaction that not many other games have given me. So please, if you haven't played the game yet. DO IT. You (probably) won't be disappointed.

I'll go for 9, that was the peak. Everything after is hardly worth calling a game or any form of entertainment.

X. Always has, and until Squeenix pull their finger out it, always will. The battle system, the level system, Blitzball (ploughed about 20 hours into that alone in one playthrough), the cutscenes, the amazing opening, the most obvious villain is obvious moment on Seymour's first appearance. Love it.

I would like to take a moment out to defend XIII though. For all it's myriad flaws the characters are some of the most evolved in all of FF. On the surface they may be irritating, self-obsessed whiners, but they all grow and become genuinely likeable by the end (which for Snow was a hell of an achievement) And Vanille is one of the most layered characters in an RPG I've ever seen (bear with me) She puts on this noxious, irritatingly chirpy exterior, because deep inside she feels such crushing despair that if she lets the facade drop for even a second she'll just curl up in a ball and weep. Once I realised that was the direction they were going with her I forgave her so many things......combat system still blows though.

Ranking them:

X>IX>VII>XIII-2>XIII>VIII>VI>XII>X-2 (even with the bonus ending. A giant moth? Really?)

I'm really surprised by some of the answers here honestly. I've never played a Final Fantasy game that I haven't enjoyed (though some are definitely better than others), but I would rank XIII-2 at pretty much the bottom of my list. It's surprising to see XIII-2 come up at pretty good spots on some other people's list. The internet would lead you to believe that everything FF13 is the anti-christ.

I have to say I'm pretty surprised for some of the love for X. I've always heard mixed choices. Usual polar opposites (Either Loved or Hated).

But it looks like I'm playing IX! I've played some FF games, but It's been so long, and I haven't been up to date on the games. Thanks for your opinions. Keep discussing if you wish, and I'll keep replying.

Man, I wish there was a legal PC port for the first 6. Maybe I should just buy one of those consoles that plays both NES, SNES, & Genesis & go on a game shopping spree to relive old times.

For me, FF went downhill with 8 & just gets worse & worse & worse. Gorgeous graphics do not a fun game make. FFX had some godawful voice acting & I don;t even know what they were thinking with FFx2.

But hey, the franchise did give us this gem: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5YHqjGlAQQw (refused to embed)
