Why is Quake 2 not on here. Seriously wtf.
Q2 is in my opinion, id Software's crowning achievement. All the innovation of the genre was refined, and polished, then culminated in this masterpiece.
Q2 was a great multi-player experience, but coming four months after GoldenEye, one month after Jedi Knight, and eleven months before Half-Life it's hard not to feel that id wasn't really firing on all cylinders in terms of the single-player experience offered.

Unreal Tournament is the best. There can be no argument against this. If you require reasons (which you should not), this game featured many fps innovations. Dual firing modes was brand new and added so much depth to the game and its bot ai was, and still is, of the highest quality.
UT's a great game -- but actually, dual-firing dates back to Tom Hall's
Rise of the Triad in '95, and
Half-Life is usually considered the watershed PC title of the late nineties in terms of refined enemy AI.

Metroid Prime isn't an FPS. Yes it's first person, yes there is shooting, but those aspects are not the main focus of the gameplay.
Perfect Dark is my favourite because it's a bit more refined than GoldenEye and introduces a lot of original ideas in terms of story, character and graphics. Shame about the framerate.
I never really dug
Perfect Dark -- it was choppy, the graphics were by most standards worse than GoldenEye's, its expansion-pak necessitation was annoying, and the level designs simply weren't as inspired as GE's. Plus -- a gun that shoots through walls?
Really?. That's out-of-the-box thinking that nearly founders the box.
To PD's credit, though, it did one-up GE in a few ways: the game's bot support and challenge mode were well-done, for example, and the co-op campaign was a pleasant addition.

Seriosuly, people actually think that doom is the best FPS ever. Jesus christ, yes that game was awesome and yeah it is good but the best FPS ever? You can look me in the eye and truthfully say that you think Doom is the greatest example of an FPS.
If so you should take a long hard look at yourself in the mirror.
Stalker SoC for me thanks.
Dude,
DOOM gets people's vote for best shooter ever because it's the
best game -- aside from the fact it's arguably the most creatively accomplished FPS ever (barring maybe
System Shock), it single-handedly popularized the genre, and is still fun to play over fifteen years on (attested to by ZDaemon's bustling online servers).
