Doom by 1000 points. But HL2? Seriously? It was good but has absolutely nothing on Doom, even now with the time/graphics etc difference Doom is still superior.

It was released in '87 -- two years before I was born -- so yeah.

I went to vote Bioshock but I think I clicked Metroid by accident... I think Bioshock was the best of them, it was very inventive, and was one of the few games that have actually scared my before :p
I hate when BIoSHock is praised for "being inventive"

play system shock 2. came out 7-9 years earlier, is a better game, And features verything BIoshock has And More. Including story (the Frame of the story, anyway. and several enemies -splicers are SS2's hybrids. Big Daddies are SS2's maintnence bots, Security bots Are SS2's turrets only mobilized.

MY favorite? DOOM. especially the Various Ports of it, They added some nice Paranoia fuel to the mix.

ANyone remember the PS1 version? that had my eyes bugging out of my head, let me tell you... fricken darkness everywhere...
Agreed -- SS2 is a vastly superior game to BioShock; the latter reflecting how little the FPS genre has changed in the ensuing years.
Calling System Shock 2 "vastly superior" is most certainly a ridiculous exaggeration. Sure, Bioshock isn't exactly "inventive" in any aspect aside from the story, but it does well by improving upon the formula that made System Shock great. Yes, the RPG elements are dumbed down several degrees in Bioshock, but I think we can all agree that System Shock 2's combat system was certainly not the best, even for that time. Bioshock makes the combat much better, provides an excellent and compelling narrative, features an awe inspiring setting, and wraps it all up in a beautiful package.

Which one is better is obviously a matter of opinion, however, I do not believe either can be considered "vastly superior" of another one as they are essentially the same game, just with different things that they do well.

Based on the impact it had at the time AND the impact it had on me personally, I'll definitely go with Half-Life. Deus-Ex comes as a close second to me. EDIT: and it's not a "pure" FPS, which gives me more reason to vote for HL.

How is Bioshock even up there? It wasn't that great of a game... I voted golden eye.
hahahahaha What? What about Bioshock doesn't make it great?
I dunno. I practically had to force myself to beat it and even then I had no fun whatsoever playing. I basically played it for the achievements.

Halo: CE was insanely fun for me, and my main introduction to the latest (at the time) generation of console gaming...

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl

In my opinion, it's one of the best games ever. I actually heard that a sequel called Call of Prypiat is even better but I haven't played it.

Well, the one I've enjoyed the most is Resistance: Fall of Man, so I'm not going to vote on the poll.

In terms of story and gameplay, Resistance is by far the best I've played. I also found it very atmospheric, and it really immersed me.

Is there something confusing about what I said?

I've always considered Resistance to be the definition of average. Nothing that really sucks, nothing really impressive. You're the first person I've ever come across that really praises the game. It's kinda... Confusing me.
Read earlier in the thread. 2 others did agree with me.

Man...

Well, out of that list you've got there, I'd say that BioShock is my favourite. But the best?

Eurgh... Halo's arguably been a major source of inspiration in a lot of modern FPSs. But then, so has Half-Life. And DOOM's sorta what started it all in the first place...

My favourite is still Bioshock - and if I had free reign here, I'd go with Portal - but the best is DOOM, for the being one of the key jumping off points for FPS'.

I mean, think about how natural FPS feels these days. How easy it is to put a story into an FPS and make it seem much more personal. How satisfying playing multiplayer is! Id are partway responsible for that, too, with Quake.

You know this feels like a big middle finger because some games on this list arent even big on F.P.Shooting...Bioshock was not a good shooter...it was a great story telling game though, but it should be on a list for best story.... Metroid Prime was not a F.P.S...first person in visual, but not a shooter, Half life and Half Life 2 should be in one catagory (same with Halo...though i only like the original), and where the hell is Perfect Dark. Perfect Dark and GoldenEye were the super-star tag team of the F.P.S age of the N64...You chose Bioshock over Perfect Dark...shame i tell you...shame

OT: With all that ranting...i still dont pick any of the games ive mentioned cause Deus Ex has got my vote...Great story, great r.p.g elements, fantastic sense of immersion, and ok combat..

EDIT: I realized...Bioshock should be replaced with SystemShock...better villian, better combat, more r.p.g, though they both have good plots

EDIT (again): It came to my attention that i forgot to have an honorable mention of S.T.A.L.K.E.R...fantastic...just fantastic
Uh... I hate to sound like a total bell-end here, but did you play Metroid Prime?

It's a shooter. You have to shoot. You don't play through the entire game with those little ball-bombs. The only way to kill enemies - which you are required to do, throughout - is by shooting them.

Sure, it wasn't a dual-stick FPS like most console shooters we play, but it was a complete FPS, no question. I don't really understand what you mean when you say it's not a shooter.
