Doom 2.

Yes, it's good even today. The first time I've played Doom and Doom 2 was in 2004. I was having some serious fun.

Yet I vote for the original Half-Life. I'm just playing HL:Source and it's so intense.

HL2 is a first-person adventure game. Deus Ex is an RPG. So is Stalker.
No, HL2 is categorically an FPS.

Agreed on DX though.

.... really? No Quake? Thats my vote.

You're lucky you included Deus Ex, because not including Quake in a list like this makes my left eye twitch...

And 50 bucks says OP is too young to remember MIDI Maze.

Deus Ex isn't a FPS game.... Although there is no best game of any types my favourites are CoD2, TF2 and Killing Floor at the moment anyway.
You play from the perspective of JC Denton who is a cop with guns. That's called a First Person Shooter.
So in Fallout 3 you play from the perspective of the Vault Dweller and you have guns that makes it a FPS. Actually doesn't. Deus Ex is a RPG and if you want to get specific an ARPG. It has FPS elements but is not a FPS game.

Wouldn't it be a FPS RPG?

It's a First Person Shooter... and an Roleplaying game.

I went to vote Bioshock but I think I clicked Metroid by accident... I think Bioshock was the best of them, it was very inventive, and was one of the few games that have actually scared my before :p
I hate when BIoSHock is praised for "being inventive"

play system shock 2. came out 7-9 years earlier, is a better game, And features verything BIoshock has And More. Including story (the Frame of the story, anyway. and several enemies -splicers are SS2's hybrids. Big Daddies are SS2's maintnence bots, Security bots Are SS2's turrets only mobilized.

MY favorite? DOOM. especially the Various Ports of it, They added some nice Paranoia fuel to the mix.

ANyone remember the PS1 version? that had my eyes bugging out of my head, let me tell you... fricken darkness everywhere...

Agreed, Bioshock is simply a dumbed-down System Shock 2.

Regardless, out of the options I have only really played GoldenEye and Bioshock; Bioshock is a terrible ->FPS<- (although I do rate the overall game highly) so for me it has to be GoldenEye.

Metroid Prime is a First Person Action-Adventure subtype that happened to feature a gun.

Personally, I'd count Role-Playing Shooters as a different genre...just as "action-adventure" doesn't quite count as a subtype of either component.

That said...I grew up a console gamer, so I have the most experience with Goldeneye and CE. I'd say they tie...Halo's got better gameplay (which it should, since it came a generation later), had fun vehicle combat, ect...but Goldeneye had some very entertaining multiplayer modes that better make it into the "wiimake".

i don't play alot of shooters. infact the only one i've played intensely is James Bond Nightfire.
which i loved INTENSELY!
Agreed. Nightfire is, without a doubt, my favorite FPS of all-time.

As for your choices though, I've only ever played Goldeneye, so... that?

I know System Shock 2 came first, and is, in many regards, a much better game (from what little I've played of it). The big problem is I played Bioshock first, so for me a lot of things that Bioshock introduced me to were new and shiney - a part of Bioshock, not System Shock. I guess my opinion would be different if I had know about System Shock before hand :p

Doom and Goldeneye are some of my favorites. However I gotta give it to Goldeneye. The game had everything, great gameplay story and multiplayer. It is also the best video game with movie connections. Plus I think it solidified/began console shooters

Which is why it is called an ARPG as to umbrella everything for Hack N Slash RPGs like say Diablo and Balder's Gate Dark Alliance and Everquest Champions of Norath and things with various different elements such as the FPS elements of Fallout 3 and Deus Ex into one big genre.

Man, no Unreal Tournament 99/2004? No Call of Duty 1 or 2? Well, those are my favorite FPS games.

I'd go with DOOM -- it started it all, and is underrated by critical snobs -- though GoldenEye 007 and Deus Ex both get nods from me (the first for helping to sophisticate the genre, and the second for its marriage RPG and FPS elements and unsurpassed in-depth gameplay).

. . .As for Half-Life? A great title, for sure -- its seemless integration of storytelling helps maintain the game's immersion, and alot could be said of its multi-player add-ons -- but I always felt that its survivalist gameplay was a tad retrograde when compared to, say, GoldenEye, which had actively integrated objectives into its mission structures a year earlier. To this end, I think that alot of HL's appeal has more to do with presentation -- compare any level in it to Deus Ex's hokey inner-city environments -- but that it's not necessarily the paragon of FPS design.
actually doom was not the first fps so it did not "start it".

I was torn between Half-life and Deus Ex as far as what was up there. I would also put Thief up there too.

The option isn't there but it's Perfect Dark hands down. It's like Goldeneye Evolved, and is for sure the best FPS of the 64 era.

I really hope they make another some time, a direct sequel to the first.

Oh.

Well Thank you for telling me that.

I didn't really know what ARPG meant.

Well it is a bit confusing as it is a bit of a muddled subgenre. Any RPG that has even remotely any action type game elements to it gets lumped into it. I even think you could throw the Mass Effect games into that genre as well.
