Progressive, mostly.

Dream Theater, Protest the Hero, The Number Twelve Looks Like You, Fall of Troy, etc.

I enjoy some metal. most progressive is okay.

I like blends of metal. Progressive Death Metal (Sculptured, some early Opeth)
Blackened Death Metal (Akercocke(sp?) Wolves in the Throne Room)
Symphonic Black metal (summoning)
Doom/stoner doom/doom-death (Daylight dies, electric wizard)
but probably my favorite genre of metal is Post-metal (isis, pelican, feos, etc)

funny thing is, metal isn't my forte, I enjoy a lot of post-rock and shoegaze.

I like classic metal like Dio.

There's no sign of the morning coming
There's no sight of the day
You've been left on your own
Like a rainbow in the dark

Pretty good.

I might add it to my list of stuff to add to my ever expanding playlist.

Power, definitely (Blind Guardian, Dragonforce, Hammerfall, Sonata Artica, Kamelot, Lordi). Symphonic (especially Nightwish and Rhapsody of Fire) comes in a close second.

Starting to get into Nu Metal stuff like Disturbed and Drowning Pool, and Melodic Death Metal like Ensiferum and Finntroll.

As far as diversity goes, I'm into good rhythm riffs and blending of all the instruments to be good. I don't want a band with a guitarist that does a bunch of ass-hattery, I don't want a fucking symphonic band that believes that synth is the ONLY instrument needed, I don't want a dumbass black metal band that has shit production quality (though a thinned out production quality is fine, really there's a line between intentional and dumbass), and I especially don't want a vocalist who thinks it's cool to be a fag and sing like he's had his balls chopped off and then screams like his mother did it.

Bands that I think meet the above two requirements are:

Death
Slayer
Megadeth
Darkthrone
Mayhem
Dissection
Autopsy
Iron Maiden
Venom
Bathory

So yeah. I voted thrash metal because it's the real godfather of anything metal today.

What happened to Doom/Ambient Metal?
Opeth, Katatonia, Mors Principuim Est, and so on.
I did say autopsy which is Death/Doom. Also, isn't all metal ambient?

Could someone please explain to me how Metal has SUBGENRES?!?!? It ALL sounds pretty much like trying to wrestle a pile of cats into a tub of water while a car crashes continuously into an endless train of tin sheds during a blizzard/thunderstorm to me.

Give the unlearned some insight. Linx to videos would be appreciated if you actually try to explain to the people that are inevitably going to just shrug this thread off and just say "all metal sux, losers" without a second thought or a second brain cell.

All these subgenres boil down to three things: tonal quality, vocal quality, and amount of experimentation.

For example, a band that has a very distorted tone, with minimal experimentation, and a vocalist that jumps back and forth between clean and gutteral vocals, then you've got yourself a metalcore band.

Another example: A band with a slightly distorted tone (In between rock drive and OMGNOFUCKINGTONEATALL drive), a decent amount of experimentation and a slightly dirty vocal quality, you have a thrash metal band.

Disturbed isn't nu metal or metal at all really (anymore). Nu metal is mostly characterized by Korn and Slipknot (excluding 3rd album). Disturbed has drifted into the hard rock area as of now. That and Ensiferum is viking metal, and Finntroll is folk metal.
My mistake. I'd seen Disturbed described both ways, I just went with the one I'd seen most recently. And I'd assumed viking and melodic death metal were more or less synonymous...
