I'm pretty sure that Judas Priest and Iron Maiden are NWOBHM and Deep Purple is classic. I don't remember saying anything about classic at all. How is my example classic?

It reminded me a lot more of those bands than Slayer, Metallica, or Megadeth (the ones I see classified as thrash).

Power, definitely (Blind Guardian, Dragonforce, Hammerfall, Sonata Artica, Kamelot, Lordi). Symphonic (especially Nightwish and Rhapsody of Fire) comes in a close second.

Starting to get into Nu Metal stuff like Disturbed and Drowning Pool, and Melodic Death Metal like Ensiferum and Finntroll.

Disturbed isn't nu metal or metal at all really (anymore). Nu metal is mostly characterized by Korn and Slipknot (excluding 3rd album). Disturbed has drifted into the hard rock area as of now. That and Ensiferum is viking metal, and Finntroll is folk metal.

My mistake. I'd seen Disturbed described both ways, I just went with the one I'd seen most recently. And I'd assumed viking and melodic death metal were more or less synonymous...

Could someone please explain to me how Metal has SUBGENRES?!?!? It ALL sounds pretty much like trying to wrestle a pile of cats into a tub of water while a car crashes continuously into an endless train of tin sheds during a blizzard/thunderstorm to me.

Give the unlearned some insight. Linx to videos would be appreciated if you actually try to explain to the people that are inevitably going to just shrug this thread off and just say "all metal sux, losers" without a second thought or a second brain cell.

Enter Sandman's melody was kick ass, but it didn't resolve my biggest grief about most Metal I've been exposed to, for the life of me, I can't understand the farking vocals! I just can't understand anything they say no matter what, I got "neverland" and "take my hand," that's it. Don't get me started on the Scandanavian fantasy metal. (Webcomic reference, damn Swedish, the language, not the people)

Way of the Warrior and that other rubbish one, were halfway understandable, but they were still rubbish.

Although I'm drawn in by Metallica, I'm happy to say.

My opinions have changed, but not by a wide enough margin to break into a sprint to my nearest music store.

BTW the example of Symphonic Metal you posted has painted my opinion on all Symphonic Metal, although I could sill could understand the lyrics, it still sucked ass.

EDIT: I've thought it over, and it seems my opinion on all Metal has been unfairly painted by Death Metal. I want to sacrifice the subgenre on a pyre to C'thulu. I really, really do.

I consider myself lucky, then. I don't have to understand the lyrics to enjoy the song (with the voice as a particularly expressive instrument). Which might explain why a decent chunk of my music collection is in Japanese, Spanish, and Swedish...

Careful, I think Cthulu prefers water.

In other words, I can barely listen to most of it, myself (and the only exceptions aren't in English and have better melodies).
