Agreed. If there were no consequences we should do with our enemies like they did way back when: mount there heads on a stake. Show's who boss. As is, we should show that this isn't some petty squabble and that we're doing justice, not going off on a vengeance killing spree. We show that we're the better people and show some dignity at his funeral. That's more than he deserves though (IMO).

This. All this rejoicing at his death? Anybody remember the rejoicing around the world at 9/11? How can we claim to be better if we sink to that level? Besides, mistreating the remains would be needlessly provocative, like smoking in the room with the powderkeg.
I know, right? Let's mourn Saddam now, let's not celebrate his death in the slightest. The problem with your logic that being happy about the death of someone who's brought about the death of hundreds of people is hardly sinking to his level.
I'm sorry, I just can't bring myself to be happy about it. Now if we gave him a trial, and then threw him in jail to rot for the rest of his natural life...

Edit: And yes, sinking to his level. A death is never something to celebrate.

Edit edit: Also, please tell me you just compared Saddam to Osama, and didn't get them confused.

i think Diogenes the Cynic a Greek philosopher and one of the founders of Cynic school of philosophy said it best when he was asked about his burial.

When he asked how he wished to be buried, he left instructions to be thrown outside the city wall so wild animals could feast on his body. When asked if he minded this, he said, "Not at all, as long as you provide me with a stick to chase the creatures away!" When asked how he could use the stick since he would lack awareness, he replied "If I lack awareness, then why should I care what happens to me when I am dead?"

As an American, I'd like to say: Fuck that, they should stuff his corpse and mount it on the white-house lawn.
Whether he is an enemy, rival, or comrade the dead deserve respect. If we were to commit such an action we'd be sinking to that of a degenerate level.

So I say we respect the dead. That's the only dignity he deserves at this point

Is this really a question? Whether we respect the man or not, he should get a proper burial. Does he deserve it? Yes. Last I checked, proper burial is not something to be earned.

note: I am not saying that I support him. I just respect other people's religions.

I disagree with the majority on this one. Dead or not he was an evil man. A man who brought the death (many of them undignified themselves) to many, many people.

Obviously many people disagree with me and I completely understand and respect that, but this is just my opinion and thoughts on the matter. To be perfectly honest, now that he's dead I don't really care what happens to him.

This allows a bridge of peace.

All people have to do is cross it or they can burn it, but the chance is there that we can all move on to the other side. You can't do that by stuffing his corpse and mounting him on the White House lawn.

Besides, the garden gnomes would be offended that they have to share space. They're very territorial.
Agreed. It's better to be the bigger man in this situation

Here's an idea: how about we do whatever the hell his followers would do, even ship the body back to them if they'd accept it, so that we don't piss them off more than we already have?

Thank you for that. It's best to be civilized about this situation and give him the proper burial.

Whether friend or enemy show some respect for the dead

Non-issue, no one should give a shit. Defacing his corpse or things like that will just piss people off and make more people hate America. Just get rid of it in a simple and quick manner, and start worrying about real things.

I think desecrating the body would be a war crime.

In any case, what's the point? He's too dead to care, it doesn't help the US/allies, except making them look like barbarians.

Any corpse deserves A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF respect, including the corpse of a criminal. Including an international criminal, a war criminal, a terrorist, etc.
There's something fundamentally wrong about the belief that a corpse deserves respect. It's a corpse. Regardless of whatever your religious beliefs (or lack thereof) are, the corpse is no longer the individual, and therefore is no more worthy of respect than a rock. It's an inanimate lump of matter, there's nothing distinguishing it from any other inanimate mass.
A funeral/burial was, for a long time, a purely religious ceremony, but for the past few years (really about a hundred, in many parts of the world) it has turned secular. Sure, there is no fundamental argument/axiom that states that a corpse deserves some respect, but many of the nation's laws do state this. (I.e., fucking up graves is, in fact, a crime). In spirit of these laws, I think the providing of certain religious rites to the corpse is reasonable; spending federal funds on it, however, may not be.

As evil and twisted a man as he was, we do need to treat his body with dignity so as not to inflame our terrorist enemies over seas any more than his death already has/will. Not because I care about the feelings of terrorists but for the safety of our troops on the ground in Afghanistan Pakistan and Iraq. They are who I am concerned about and they should be the concern of every American old enough to understand the concept of death. We don't want to endanger them any more than they already are, we all want them home safe. In addition we do not want to provoke another 9-11.

How we treat our enemies shows what sort of human beings we are, of course he deserves respect.

you discus me, he might have killed hundred of Americans, but the American Army has killed thousands Iraqi and Afghans over the cause of 10 years. what gives you the moral high ground? The bush & Blair administration can not claim moral high ground.

and yes, he should get a proper Islamic burial

To put it in perspective: Al Qaeda & sattilite organizations regularly torture and mutilate their prisoners, including civilians and children while they're still alive.

Sorry, but you lose decoration rights at your funeral when that shit's on your rapsheet.

He's dead.

What exactly is gained by stroking your revenge boner by doing stuff to the body?

Just makes you look worse and pisses people off. Half the world already hates America's guts, most of the rest thinks you're a bad joke. The last thing you need at this point is to go and give credence to all those things people say about you.

Its a corpse. Its nothing anymore. People care about the dead too much. There are far more useful uses for a corpse besides ceremony.
