So, the time has come for me to venture out of retro RPGs and give the current generation a try. I usually go to the pawn shops to pick up my games now, and the only two that I find worth trying are Borderlands and Oblivion. I find at these conundrums I should ask for assistance from escapists.

They're on two totally different levels. One is a shooter with RPG elements, one is a fantasy RPG with 3 voice actors. Both are good no matter what system you get them on, it's all a matter of if you want a 15-20 hour shooter or a what you make of it RPG.

Oblivion I found to have lasted me many many hours/days (if you want more out of the game though, you have to get PC for extra mods). Borderlands is plain stupid shooting fun, but it needs it's DLC's. It all comes down to what floats your boat, but both are great choices.

I put A LOT more hours into Oblivion than I did in Borderlands. I'd go with Oblivion.

Both are pretty fun and explore, but I've had more fun with Borderlands and played it a lot more, so I'm going with Borderlands. Besides, they don't do that dead stare like Oblivion, I'm surprised my soul wasn't stolen yet.

Borderlands gave me a solid week of fun with friends

Oblivion gave me many lonely weeks of fun by myself >___>

Make sure you get lots of mods to go with Oblivion from the TESNexus if you choose to get it.

Oblivion is the greatest game ever.

Just saying.

I've played 250 hours of Oblivion and 90 of Borderlands

I am qualified to say Oblivion is the best.

I would say definitely go with Oblivion, especially if you are more into RPGs, as your post states. Sure, Borderlands allows for some character progression and possesses a fairly deep loot system, but, while it is a shooter first and foremost, Oblivion is unadulterated RPG.

Regardless of genre, I would argue that Oblivion is simply the better game, even though I enjoyed Borderlands. Oblivion aims to create a believable world where the player can lose himself for days, and, although modern technology hampered it, it mostly succeeds. Borderlands, on the other hand, is much less ambitious, striving more to create an experience than a world. If you have a friend to play it with, though, it sure is one hell of an experience.

My advice would be to rent Borderland and purchase Oblivion (preferably on PC).

Like most everyone else has already stated, both good, but Oblivion you get more bang for the buck. Plus it's a much more open game. Borderlands is a go here, do this, now go here and do this game. Oblivion you can do whatever the hell you want pretty much from the get-go.

I had more fun with borderlands, but they're kind of hard to compare. If you're looking for an RPG though Oblivion is more of that than Borderlands, so I'd go with Oblivion, even though I found it kind of dull.

VERY different Games.

Borderlands is a FPS-RPG that takes a mission/region setup similar to Diablo (smaller, mostly open questing areas). Also a very big loot game. Only four classes, each with 3 skill trees.

Oblivion is, well, Oblivion. WIDE open world. Medieval fantasy setting. Customizable characters and level progression. Go where you want. Do what you want. Much less structured, and has some issues with leveling.

I prefer Oblivion, but I like Borderlands, too, for completely different reasons.

Both are great games, but I think Oblivion has more replay value and has some Borderland's UI is a little cumbersome.

Really and honestly though, it's almost apples and oranges.

I would choose Oblivion 10 times out of 10 over borderlands. I played the demo for it(it being borerlands lol) and did not find it very enjoyable. :(

If your looking for a better single player experience then go Oblivion all the way.

If you have 1-3 friends to play with and want a more loot frenzy shoot em up then I would recommend Borderlands.

Borderlands is more accessible but with oblivion the content possibilities are endless if it's your kind of game(especially with mods if you get it on PC).

I've played Oblivion for more than 3000 hours and I still wouldn't say that it is anywhere near the best game ever. Hell it's not even in me top 10 list.

Elder Scrolls w/ Bethesda is freaking amazing. I have never been let down with anything made by either group. Oblivion is an incredibley impressive and eye-candy-esque game. It is capable of many days worth of pure gameplay, and I have beaten it time and time again thanks to the heavy immersion.

Borderlands is a very independant game with ungodly amounts of leveling and types of guns. It is an absolutely fantastic cooperative game with a decent but fractured story. Although playing by yourself isn't nearly as much fruitful, it is entertaining nonetheless. The DLC did not impress me, though.

It basically comes down to the question of if you want a multiplayer experience or not. Borderlands offers flexible and active co-op, but Oblivion is strictly lone wolf.

Both games are spectacular, but I personally prefer Oblivion

It really depends on what you want. Oblivion is a hardcore fantasy RPG and Borderlands is somewhat comical RPG-shooter hybrid. My personal choice goes to Borderlands, but I wasn't quite satisfied with the game myself, so if you're one of those people who don't like to get a taste of what can be done I would suggest Oblivion. When you come down to it, it's really about which game appeals to you more.
