ANY game is better than Oblivion, the over-hyped piece of shit...
As for Borderlands, I thought it was OK but not fantastic. If you want a good modern RPG I'd recommend either The Witcher 2 or Dragon Age: Origins. If fantasy isn't your thing though, wait until Deus Ex: Human Revolution comes out. It looks fantastic.

Borderlands SP is somewhat full of grind... While Oblivion is... Well... It will eat up half of your lifetime... Both are fun, so choose any between the two.
erm... both these games are on the current console generation, which makes it a bit odd to call them "retro"...
but whatever, the games can not be compared. Even the genre isn't the same. You'd have a hard time comparing oblivion to Gothic.
If you can get the PC version of Oblivion, get that. The Console version of Oblivion still has plenty to offer in the "messing around in the gameworld" department but if that isn't your thing then get borderlands.

Oblivion is by far my favorite game of all time. Borderlands is fun but this is no contest to me at all.
I've spent close to a thousand hours on oblivion and probably about a hundred on Borderlands.

If you do Borderlands I could only tolerate it with friends, but I still play oblvion nowadays even though ive already beaten it with like every race except imperials because they suck. If/when you do get oblivion Redguards are the best fighters, Bosmers are the best rogues, and Bretons are the best magicians and can be pretty good fighters because of their magic tolerance.

If you want an RPG play Oblivion. Borderlands isn't really an RPG.
I had way more fun playing Borderlands and it is one of my all-time favorite games. It is shooter where your character levels up.
Oblivion is probably the best open world RPG I've played. So much to do and such a huge world the main quest just kinda disappears into the back ground as you run around doing everything else.

Borderlands is far more fun to play, but you will likely invest very little time into it compared to Oblivion.
Oblivion, like most Bethesda games, has a LOT of flaws but can greatly immerse you in a more memorable experience.
Personally, I voted Borderlands. Oblivion is the better game, but with Skyrim coming out this year, I'd simply save for it rather than get a fairly dated title in Oblivion.

I love borderlands, but oblivion is better in almost all regards, also think about fallout, that was good.
I thought Borderlands was a dull and lifeless experience. And Oblivion...well it isn't really teeming with charisma, either, but I still like it. Granted, in any playthrough I will get to a point where I'm utterly bored with the game and will run around naked in a town, killing everyone with my fists until I die. Then I'll put Oblivion away for a year or so. Bethesda is good at making worlds, but they are pretty bad at making that world feel alive.
