Oblivion is overall a deeper game than Borderlands. But as stated by others, they are quite different games aside from the first person perspective.

Borderlands = the Diablo of shooters
Oblivion = really looooong first person RPG

I'm not sure if I've been ninja'd yet, but fallout 3 is basically both put into one package, and without Co-op. Especially good if you get the game of the year edition.

If you can only pick out of those two howevever, then Oblivion, if only for the fact that you nedn't buy a game for a while. If money and saving up isn't a problem, then definetely go for Borderlands. I havent tried co-op, but I found it to be decent fun on single-player, so definetely still give it a go.

My main decision still rests with fallout 3 though, its about $30 dollars used on amazon.com, might as well take it. If you're a UK resident, then it's about £15. Not too shabby, I say.

BORDERLANDS.

One of my favorite games ever.

Beautiful art style, funny as hell, and over 2 billion guns, and counting.
the actual count for the game with no dlc is over 14 million, *snobly raise glasses*.

I say borderlands but only because it is my favourite game, (though not the best game I have played).

Borderlands is much, much faster to play than Oblivion. Pace-wise, not length. Oblivion is much more free and open. If you want choice and a big open world, go for Oblivion. If you want a dizzying amount of possible weapons and loot and enjoy first-person shooting, go for Borderlands.

Oblivion, Borderlands is just a grindfest, with no story, no good missions, and no good gameplay. It's basically just shoot the same enemies repeatedly and find a good gun, rinse and repeat.

They can't really be compared.

Oblivion is just the classic Elder Scrolls games now in 3d, complete with poorly designed character development system and repetitive terrain.

Borderlands is a Diablo 2 clone in all aspects, apart from the isometric, click-to-pummel-stuff interface exchanged with that of a 3d shooter. Same grind for "the perfect" randomized item drop and same "oh boy, her comes another two million enemies"-gameplay.

Both are fantastic games, in my opinion, and well worth buying. Personally I prefer Borderlands but that is purely a matter of taste. When the choice is between those two you can not really make a bad decision :)

PS: At all the people that claim Borderlands to have no story: You can not have played many hours of the game. It's one of the most compelling adventures ever squeezed into an action game. The story's obvious source of inspiration (Won't spoil it by hinting) only makes it so much better.

I like to kill things, loot their corpses before desecrating them. So Borderlands would be my pick.

But if you want to act like a Druid (which is synonymous with Pussy - the feline kind), try Oblivion (For PC), get a few of those graphics texture mods, and there's this one mod which literally changed a lot of the generic areas in the maps to these beautiful landmark where you can hang out and commune with nature, like pussies (the feline kind of course).

But remember, if you want to feel like a tiger, Borderlands is for you. Don't be a pussy. (the feline kind).

So, the time has come for me to venture out of retro RPGs and give the current generation a try. I usually go to the pawn shops to pick up my games now, and the only two that I find worth trying are Borderlands and Oblivion. I find at these conundrums I should ask for assistance from escapists.
Both are excellent games, but calling Borderlands an RPG is about equivalent to calling the Iron Man suit a Gundam. There's some vague similarities, but it's simply not an RPG.

Kind of different games you got there, not much of a comparison to be had really.

Oblivion is a must-play single-player that can (and will) consume about 100-200 hours of your life. Borderlands is an shooter with RPG elements and from personal accounts, is better played with friends or online.

EDIT: oh god wat

I was going for the nature loving folks > . > Since that was the only aspect of Oblivion I enjoyed, found the combat to be relatively boring, the dialogues as well as, then there was the boring looking gremlins beyond the Oblivion gates.

The Daedra folks were cool ... they had nice loot ... *munches on Daedra's heart* Tasty!

Really depends on what you want.
I'd personally go with Borderlands, because you can get the GOTY pack for really cheap now (I did) and it adds a shit ton of extra stuff into the game. On top of that, playing with friends is just a joyous experience, especially with split-screen.

Still can't figure out why they have vertical split-screen instead of horizontal tho.

Oblivion's better no question but those two games are like apples and oranges. you can't really compare them.

Or wait for skyrim.

Personally, Borderlands. Oblivion has too many little flaws for me, and the effort it takes to mod them out is disproportionately large.

Plus there's the fact that Borderlands has the kewlest intro of any game ever.

In a basic sense. Oblivion for by yourself, Borderlands for with a friend. Don't play Borderlands by yourself...really...just don't. Its a hundred times better with a friend. That said Oblivion is one of my favorite games ever. So basically its a choice between SP and MP.

They're on two totally different levels. One is a shooter with RPG elements, one is a fantasy RPG with 3 voice actors. Both are good no matter what system you get them on, it's all a matter of if you want a 15-20 hour shooter or a what you make of it RPG.
Yep.

I've played them both, and both are great. Oblivion might offer a little more as a single player experience, I found Borderlands enhanced slightly when playing with my friend.

I guess it's up to you and the experience you're looking for.
