I'm excited. Platinum is a great developer. The people who are acting like the series is destroyed now are just hilarious to me, especially since Metal Gear Solid 5 was just recently confirmed.

What's wrong with completely blowing a trivial situation waaaaaaaaay out of proportion?
Hahahahahaha
Though you must admit, it's very different to what we were originally promised :(

In my mind, not a Metal Gear SOLID title, so I don't care. Looks like a fun hack and slash, but they made the right decision taking out the "Solid". It's nice to see the brand overall expanding into new genres.

Don't really care about them turning it into a hack n slasher, buuuuuuuuut...
I am really, really, REEEEEEEEEEALLY pissed that Rising's place in the timeline has changed to after MGS4!
Honestly, it just doesn't.
Nothing can come AFTER MGS4!!!!
At the end of MGS4 Ryden got his family back, why would he bother picking up his sward again?. Also all possible threats had been dealt with, Liquid Ocelot is dead, Big Boss is dead (for real this time) Vamp is dead (again, this time for real), all the plot threads concerning Foxhound, The Patriots, or anything else where tied up, there is literally NO room to continue the story from there!

Not really. Kojima had said it would be very different in terms of gameplay. When it was announced, they had already changed "Tactical Espionage Action" to "Lightning Bolt Action". Not to mention Raiden was an extremely over-the-top character in Metal Gear Solid 4.

It's a spin-off, plain and simple. It's not the end of stealth in Metal Gear. You'll just have to wait for Metal Gear Solid 5.

Two years ago when they announced this game as "Lightning Bolt Action" I already knew that it would turn out like this, I had just hoped that they would have done it a bit more... I don't know... awesome?

Everything I have seen in the trailer screams mediocrity and genericness, I will wait until the game is out before I judge it but, with what I have seen up until now... I think I will pass on this game.

Weren't all the Metal Gear Solids just Kojima going "Why do you like this so much? You know I'm just trolling all of you, right?"

And with that outlook I don't really care, and like someone said it's not like it's a Solid game.

(MGS fan BTW)

I really liked the original idea of rising where your sword would actually cut enemies in half when you attacked them. Now you have to slash at them until their HP is down and then you get a QTE to finish them off in a gimmicky way. They honestly could've done much much better with what they have except they settled for generic hack and slash. It might be fun when it comes out but I wont be supporting something that is clearly giving up it's potential because the devs were to lazy to think of a way to make it more interesting.

Copy/pasted from Leaked Metal Gear Rising Trailer:

Before I start talking about the actual game, I need to say this:

If you can't speak English fluently, then it should be a crime to take English words and do weird stuff with them, like stick two words together into one just because you think it sounds cool. That pretty much makes every singer, songwriter, and video game and anime maker in Japan a felon, but whatever, they need to be reprimanded.

As far as the game goes, despite being an MGS fan, I'm not opposed to the new direction that Rising is going. With the original trailer, I was pretty confused as to how that would work. Maybe they thought the same thing and re vamped the entire game structure, and like I said, I'm okay with doing something like that. If you'll remember, Resident Evil 4 went through a couple major changes to its core structure before being finalized, and now it's considered one of the greatest video games of all time.

I also really like that they took "solid" out of the title, as not only does Rising have nothing to do with Solid Snake himself, but it signifies that this game is going to be largely different from the other MGS games, giving fair warning to die hard fans that it's going to be vastly different from the previous installments. And I think that my first paragraph explains perfectly well how I feel about the rest of the title.

I don't get it what is there to ruin your playing as an op robot\samurai\ninja it was always going to be a zaney hack n slash with a side of cheese ,in fact the very idea that this would be a stealth game baffles me

Loved Kamiyas work on the Devil May Cry games.
Loved Bayonetta.
Loved the trailer for Rising.

Can't fucking wait ^_^.

(That and the fact that I grasp the concept of this being a spin-off therefore I am freed of the burden of wasting time talking about how they're apparently ruined MGS forever. Feels nice.)

I really didn't like Metal Gear Solid after Metal Gear Solid 2, story-wise.
Metal Gear Solid 3, Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops, Peacewalker, and even MGS4 just got too fantastic and anime-ish.
Not that I didn't have hours of fun and so many cool moments playing them.
(MGS4 online was a BLAST, and I was addicted to recruiting soldiers in Portable Ops.)
But the story and the world/plot has gotten out of hand. I really don't give a fuck how MGS Rising is going to fit in story-wise, Raiden slicing things in half like ninja gaiden and running up a sword being held by a giant mech, or the guys/cyborgs in the suits fighting with swords, is nothing next to the extent of retarded things that have changed in the main games. (the ones with the Solid at the end, btw)
So how do you feel now that metal gear solid is the new Bayonetta?
The game play looks sweet. I wonder what took so fucking long for developers to figure this equation out:
<color=green>Sword + cuts_through_[everything] + manual_slicingpath_analogcontrol = AWESOME.

Yeah, I see your point

I guess its just the fact that Kojima said the series would retain a stealth element, which now seems ridiculous given what's displayed in the trailer, why would you want to be stealthy when you could just hack everything into confetti.
Also, the game was sposed to retain metal gears 'no kill' ranking something that once again seems impossible.
The fact that the cutting mechanics we were promised and shown in the previous trailers have now been pushed aside is a major let down as well.

Not saying this will be a bad game by any means
I was just a bit disappointed :(

But hey
Platinum is awesome as you said
Bayonetta and Vanquish are two of my favs so I'm sure revengeace will be great.

I said MGS is dead but that doesn't mean Rising will be bad. It seems like Platinum Games released an action, sword-fighting game under the guise of Metal Gear. I'll likely get it and enjoy it irrespective of its title. So far, though, in my mind, MGS ended with Guns of the Patriots Peace Walker.

I don't want to be dogmatic, though. Maybe Rising will prove otherwise once its out. I can't help but feel a bit sad, though. This is the series I literally grew up playing. To see what that trailer did to it... I don't know what to think anymore.

Didn't Snake (Otacon, really) pretty much extinguish technological warfare in Guns of the Patriots? Now they've got this new cybernetic thing going on which undoubtedly rivals the Patriots' technological capabilities kind of undoing everything that Snake, Raiden, and the rest of the gang fought so hard to get rid of. By this, I mean, now that every soldier is, literally, a robot, how hard would it be to instate combat control the same way that the Patriots did?

Raiden fucking got his cybernetics removed so he could start a family with Rose and Little John. Why the hell would he go back to the bad-ass ninja lifestyle that he took up when he left Rose? Can't get enough of the rush of war can he? I suppose that makes for an interesting psychological story but I honestly don't know if the devs thought that hard about it.

Sincerely,

A butthurt fanboy.

Metal Gear Solid is dead? News to me.

One spin-off game in the series that tries something new does not ruin the entire franchise, you should be glad that they are experimenting with something new. That sword-fighting looks smooth and intuitive in comparison to how clunky sword combat was in MGS2 and MGS4, so melee combat has certainly seen the kind of improvement the MGS games always needed. You should enjoy it not just because it will be a good game but because it also has the potential to be a good Metal Gear game at the same time it experiments with what we have seen. MGS4 and Peace Walker did nothing more than conclude Snake and Big Boss's stories, they are important to the story but we could still move on from there.

I grew up playing Metal Gear too, but I don't feel like that trailer has ruined Metal Gear at all. From a gameplay perspective there is no reason a powerful player character can't also utilize stealth, as Batman Arkham Asylum and City both proved with their predator stealth (hiding from enemies and getting the drop on them from the shadows), just because the trailer didn't show Raiden using stealth doesn't mean he can't. Also Metal Gear games have always been well-known for their story, we honestly don't know enough about it to determine if it isn't of the same quality as the other games. Just wait until the game comes out and then you can properly judge it.

All of that infrastructure and technology for the War Economy set up by the Patriots was not destroyed. All that Snake and Otacon did was remove the Patriot's control over their own control system thus crippling them as an organization. The Private Military Companies obviously must have filled the power vacuum left over from the destruction of the Patriots and went about their business and took the next logical step by retrofitting their soldiers with cybernetics (proven possible with characters like Gray Fox, the Tengus, the Frogs, and of course Raiden himself). I would imagine that there are still regular soldiers enhanced by nano-machines and then there are the elite guards who are cybernetic as seen in the trailer.

Raiden's human appearance at the end of MGS4 according to the official MGS4 Database was his Ninja cybernetics being replaced with cybernetics that look more human. Given his current appearance Raiden's original body being restored seems unlikely. This story is stated to be taking place several years after MGS4 so who is to say that Raiden didn't raise his son and live a happy life with Rose, for all we know his son John could be in Elementary School or something. I don't see why Raiden can't find purpose in fighting in wars but at the same time love his family, Military families are capable of doing it so I don't see why Raiden can't do it. I actually like that they are dealing with Raiden's psychological trauma and handling how he has found purpose in the battles that he fights and has risen above the past, he is choosing the battles he fights unlike in the past when he had no choice. There is lots of room for character development.

It's a spin-off. I think we have a lot to look forward to, with MGS HD Collection (2 more moths for us EU residents), Rising providing us with something different and MGS5 being in production (as soon as Kojima finishes that fancy new engine).
Being pretty much a MGS fanboy I still don't think this will ruin the series. Because story fits between Sons of Liberty and Guns of the Patriots, I think this one can be easily skipped if you're not that interested in Raiden as a character. As I pointed out before, they did promise completely functional stealth gameplay for those of us who choose to take non-lethal path. Besides it's hard to take anything from 3-min flashy trailer at Spike "VGA" that concentrated more on text card spouting gibberish and close-ups of characters slicing (or being sliced) into tiny pieces.
