Well the Wii outgrew it's great reputation, so I don't see why it can't work in the opposite way.
The Wii ever had a reputation among actual gamers for being anything other than a waste of time?

OT Yes it's possible for it to outgrow it's reputation, it just hasn't yet.

I think you're confusing the PS3 with the 360
Thats what I was thinking. I hate my Xbox a lot more then my PS3. In fact I've hardly seen any PS3 hate.
You can't have been paying much attention then because there is plenty around and despite my frustration with my 360 I always played it more than my PS3 when I had it.

Personally I think that the bad rep for the playstation (some bad games and high price), the x box (easy breakage) and finally the wii( kids toy) will ever out live there reputations even if they have been fixed.

in another not by some other posters
In my opinion you shouldnt hate on the xbox's membership price as a membership go's it's rather cheep 50 bucks for 12 months is pretty dam cheep.

And I have used both the playstation 3 and x box online services and can honestly say that the membership gives makes a difference in the services it's worth what you pay for.

I can't say anything about the new playstation membership. I haven't used it yet.

Being a late adopter to the PS3, I haven't been aware of any "Bad Reputation". Apart from say the usual Fanboism of both Xbox 360 and PS3 and the quick defense of each.

Maybe this thread should have been discussing the pros and cons of each? Or has the original question blurred into 360 vs PS3? haha :D

why pay $60 a month to play
Where did you hear that? For me it costs 50 bucks a month.
A friend told me it was $5 a month. It doesn't matter, the point is why pay for online when it's free elsewhere. Especially if it's filled with the aforementioned 12 year-olds.
Derp I mean 50 bucks a year. Either way, you can get a group of friends, in all honesty it's just excessive statement, yeah there are 12 year olds but they aren't actually that common. I'd recommend you stay away from Halo 3 (or at least stay in a private party chat).

Lets see Shamus Young's take [http://www.shamusyoung.com/twentysidedtale/?p=4355]
Expensive. Small library. Hard to program. And immunized against technological advances.

And by the way: One minute loading screens in Killzone 2? How is this thing supposed to keep up in 2016 when it seems to be struggling already?

Shameful.
The reputation isn't so much around game fans as the people who actually make games. In that case there is no one who will ever enjoy babysitting a bunch of SPEs. I guess it is better than babbysitting without SMT or AltiVec (thanks to microsoft... two features Toshiba/Sony DID NOT WANT).

However, at Valve's request, they where willing to be "as open as Apple", which is huge for a console, so I vote "neutral" for now.

It had a bad reputation? The PS3 was always a system people knew would get cheaper and would get a library of great games, they just didn't start arriving until a few years after launch. The reputation hasn't changed, just the situation in that the PS3 is now what everyone knew it would eventually be.

Despite the large number of great games that have come out for the system, I still occasionally come around some badmouthing. Although this is almost always by Microsoft fanboys, I think gamers in general can still feel some of the fallout from the system's initial bombing. What I want to know if you think the PS3 will ever shed its former title of industry laughing stock or do you think a bad first impression will haunt it for the rest of its lifespan.
I could care less what others think, I don't don't see the PS3 as better than my PC, but as far as other consoles go I have no regret with my choice as I don't like the Wii and don't have much desire to play online.

It has a bad reputation? Since when? I can't find anything wrong with my PS3, but my Wii is plenty fucked up.

For what it's worth, www.gamefaqs.com had a poll recently: what game console do you expect to buy the most games for in the next year. It is kind of a Nintendo fan site, yet PS3 won handily.

I've never owned any console apart from the PC, so I consider myself relatively unbiased as far as other consoles go. The only bad thing I can think of regarding the PS3 is that Mass Effect is a 360 exclusive. I prefer RPG's to FPS games, and it seems that there are more 360 RPG exclusives. Apart from that, it's all good. I think I'd probably go for the PS3 if I was to buy my first console any time soon, simply because of free multiplayer, and because all my friends use it.

This feels like a bit of a thread dedicated to flaming... *Cough*...

I don't think the ps3 ever really had a "bad rep". Was I not paying attention? It's had less sales than the other consoles of its generation, but that doesn't make it inferior...

I dont think the ps3 ever had a bad reputation.
But if it does it was probably the price. thats right just the price.
and a lot of people will argue the lack of exclusives like Gears or Halo.
and I'll argue: "hahaha, cool bro"
XD
No I'm not a PlayStation fan-boy or anything but to me it looked like the most reasonable system to invest in since when i got it, it was 600$ :O
now Ive turned into a tiny trophy whore and yeah.
Although more of my friends play on 360 i kinda wish i could afford both!

only thing that ever gave it a bad rep was pricepoint... the 360 has a worse rep what with the red rings. I love my sony to death, but own all the consoles... and I think the ps3 hasn't ever particularly had a bad reputation except for the whole "it'll cure cancer" thing...

It's bad reputation was sealed the moment everyone found out it was trying to be everything in your living room at once and make you pay dearly for it, not to mention was arrogantly forcing a new disk media format on the world that was totally unnecessary. That hasn't changed, nor has it's focus on style over substance, so it's reputation hasn't changed a bit.

EDIT: the first line is for anyone who thinks that it has bad rep for any reason past it's release date when there were few games for it and who don't realize that xbox fail rate is far over 200%. Sorry for any confusion. No offense to OP ... assumptions were made. END EDIT

Woah there 360/pc gamer fanboy (because you can't be talking about wii having better rep) let's hold on a second and get straight what system doesn't break down in a month or less due to terrible construction nor has mandatory yearly sign up for their online networking nor has a weak motion control system. While it had few games at launch and granted I was an xbox360 owner, the ps3 is a system that you get more bang for your buck out of and more stable.

I'm not going to bring up anything dealing with pc gaming as if you can keep up with the hardware, you're paying less and you've obviously got an internet connection.

...Wii is the kids' console...
Oh piss off it is. Im getting tired of everyone saying "Wii's for kids". Have any of you actually USED the Wii with a good game, Like Monster Hunter Tri, or Tenshu? you cant say that breaking peoples necks, arms, stabbing, slashing blood everyone isn't a kids game. "yayyyy!! That man is pouring red cordial!!"
Just to make it clear: I was reciting the consoles' reputations I've heard, not that I actually believe them... I haven't even played Wii for an amount of time or with enough games I'd deem suffice to judge it as a serious gaming device.
Curse the internet's inability to determine what is actually been said. >.<

i wasnt aware it had a bad rep

i dislike it personally the game library is completely opposite of my tastes and i prefer the xbox 360 controller a lot but there are plenty of people the ps3 serves perfectly well. im just not one of them. but it is a fine console when the games are made properly
