Boycott also means to abstain from purchasing or using. If you don't buy something you are indeed boycotting it by definition. Common usage not withstanding.
You only talked about the
first part of that definition. The full definition says: to combine in abstaining from, or preventing dealings with, as a means of intimidation or coercion.
As a means of intimidation or coercion. If I decide that I don't want to buy a Hershey's chocolate bar because I'm not in the mood for it, that's not boycotting. If I don't buy a Hershey's chocolate bar because they kill animals or something, that's boycotting.
