Poll: Can you drive with manual transmission?

I love my shift cars. They just have so much pickup, and I have so much control. I'd take a regular clutch (no silly sequential things) 5 or 6 speed anything over the fanciest 7 speed auto. shift cars are just so much fun, and though I can see how somebody might prefere an auto, everybody I'v tauht, loved it and wanted one imideitely (two of them even made a wayyy high offer on my old 5-speed rice burner 
). it is sad though that nobody learns to drive one anymore though, and a lot of people haven't even heard of them (a women in my calculus class didn't belive me when she overheard me say that my car didn't have park, and claimed she had never even heard of a clutch). and it really sucks how the car companys are charging MORE for regular shifts, by almost 1000 in some cases! I mean, try and find a good manual trans that isn't a $50000+ rwd supersport(no rwd cause of ohio snow). It's almost impossible to find it in domestic brands, and a lot of asian cars don't offer them now either, like the maxima. It is getting harder to find them now, and i don't like it >:|

I can. I learned on a crappy pickup truck while I was working at a car dealership. I don't like it terribly much, mainly because I primarily drive on city roads with a lot of stop-and-go traffic and it's always those standing starts that irritate me.

I first learned to drive with an automatic because that is what most people in America drive. A manual transmission costs extra here. Not sure why. Anyways, after I started working a body shop, pulling cars in and out of the bays, I had to learn how to drive a manual. It's not very hard once you get the rhythm down.

To say you can drive at all implies you can drive manual, so really you could remake the poll "can you drive a car" and have "yes,no,partially". Where I'm from if you can't drive manual you only get a "restricted" probation license for the duration of your probation (as oppose to a probationary license).
As far as I'm concerned it should be manditory to drive a manual for the first few years, at the moment they have all sorts of silly restrictions to try and compensate for people not being taught to learn, a lot of those could be removed if people had to learn to drive manuals (as it takes longer) and it is also generally safer due to the extra control and awareness (hard to accidently speed in a manual).

Well, I learned to drive in the US, so I learned automatic first. Chile, on the other hand, is mostly manual transmissions, so when I was down there several years ago, I learned to drive stick. The car I learned on was a little Renault, and, frustratingly, it would stall on you if you just looked at it wrong.
Back in the US, I ended up buying a POS '84 300ZX to restore, with a manual trans. My sister's Tiburon also has a manual trans. Between the two, I keep myself from losing the technique.
Like others have said, though, city driving is annoying with a manual trans.

Where I live at you have to be able to drive manual in order to get a license. In fact, during the driving training you don't even get to touch an automatic gearbox.
Personally I prefer the manual: I feel (and am) more in control while driving.
Add to that the slippery track training for wet/icy conditions and you suddenly begin to like ABS system a whole lot more.
And this is to Wyatt, criticising european cars:
It's not like our car industry is doing worse than yours, ours generally consume less fuel (due to higher power output/cc of cylinder volume) without a noticable loss at power or speed. Oh, and let's not forget that ours also look better (though this is purely personal opinion).

I can only drive Manuals, I suffer from lead foot, so an automatic becomes a death machine if I drive one.

In the UK almost everybody learns manual - the only people I know that drive automatic cars are over 50

From Germany (builders of Golf carts instead of golfcarts ^^...but let's not forget Mercedes, BMW and for cars that are actually awesome, Audi), never even drove a car without manual transmission.
And if someone cannot manage shifting gears while paying attention to the traffic and things like speed limitations, he should get his license taken away. Even if he lives in the US or somewhere else where automatic is common. If you cannot do more than one thing at once, you are a danger behind the wheel.

Yes, started driving lessons a couple of months ago and after stalling all the time I now only stall about once every 2 hours. That said, my driving instructor got very worried the other day when I tried to put the car in gear with out putting the clutch down, and then doing the same thing 10 minutes later.
