Well, I learned to drive in the US, so I learned automatic first. Chile, on the other hand, is mostly manual transmissions, so when I was down there several years ago, I learned to drive stick. The car I learned on was a little Renault, and, frustratingly, it would stall on you if you just looked at it wrong.
Back in the US, I ended up buying a POS '84 300ZX to restore, with a manual trans. My sister's Tiburon also has a manual trans. Between the two, I keep myself from losing the technique.
Like others have said, though, city driving is annoying with a manual trans.
