Poll: Can you swim?

I think I'm a pretty good swimmer. I guess I was 4-6 when I learned to swim.

I was taught how to swim when very young but I'm not particularly good at it, just enough to save a life (which I have actually done twice, once when I capsized a boat and once when the dog strangled itself on a buoy rope) but that's about it.

I can also swim quite well. That is, I could list time I swam. I did a mean backstroke, maybe I still do. Technically I should be a better swimmer as my physical fitness has only improved.

I like swimming. I'm not an athlete or anything, but I can swim pretty well.

Not counting people who were unable to swim because of a disability, I've never met anyone who couldn't swim...

Not really, no. I skipped all the swimming classes I could. Most Physical Education classes, come to think of it.

I know how to swim.... if by swim you mean move in water without drowning. I can stay afloat and move slowly through very calm water. If that counts as swimming then I'm a swimmer. And I learned to swim when I was about 7 years old because we HAD TO. I had no choice. The school I went to had a pool and they made us swim in it, and it wasn't fun, since they made people race and I didn't like racing because I always came in second last.

But then again I live in Australia, somewhat near the coast. Pretty much everyone in Australia can swim. It's really not that hard. You can stay afloat in water by just.... kicking your legs back and forth. Anyone can stay afloat in water, as long as you don't panic. Heck, the human body will naturally float the surface in most cases.

Teaching sailing kinda requires the ability to swim, and do other things while swimming, such as righting a capsized boat

So that's a big yes for me.

You can't live in the Netherlands and not swim, for obviously we have water everywhere. Solution: all kids learn to swim as part of primary school education

I took me awhile to learn how to float on my back when I was a kid, but after that yeah I was pretty solid. Not fast but competent. I haven't done any proper swimming for years though so hopefully it's like riding a bike.

I can swim, but very very badly. Partly the reason I hated primary school, as it was mandatory.

I can swim, but I live a few meters away from the beach and spend there pretty much most months of every summer, so I kind of have to. Although I only learned how to properly swim when I was 13 or so, and was taught by a friend.

That's because while we did have swimming classes during 4th grade, I only went to the first class and refused to go to any other. It's a shame, because I could be a much better swimmer right now, but as it is, I'm just about average.

When I was born my mother was a very experienced swimming teacher and, rather than send me to day-care, she decided it was more appropriate to take me to work for the first decade+ of my childhood. As a result, yeah, I'm a pretty darn awesome swimmer.

My fitness in the last several years has prevented me from having the endurance for lengths and lengths of swimming but I still have all the techniques and a qualified life-guard's certificate with me.

Not just that I like it, but I need it.
I live near the seaside and global warming isn´t helping keeping the sea levels low, so it's imperative I know how to swim... and know it well...
