Damn, I'm in New Zealand and I wasn't aware of this. Mind you, I never keep up with the news these days...

Personally, it's a pretty stupid rule. Does the government even have the right to limit what we name our children anyway? I've heard worse names at my school, such as 'Bon Berry'.

Ffs guys :I

That's stupid. Just because it could offend religious people doesn't mean it you can't name them something. Lucifer isn't exclusive to Christianity according to some other posters. Maybe they'll get offended too!

I actually wonder if you wrote an articulate letter explaining many of the points laid out in this thread if they'd give you special dispensation (not that you should have to) for proving you're not just a stupid person picking a bad name.

[sub]Marvolo is a nice middle name though...[/sub]
I'm actually a huge fan of the normal first name strange middle name combination. I wouldn't mind calling my kid something like Eric (grandfather's name) Montgomery Thomas.

remember that thats also the name of the devil. OOOOOH SCARY!

imo its a cool name. THE ONLY REASON AND I MEAN ONLY that anyone would dislike this name is due ENTIRELY to religion.

and quite frankly those 1000-2000+ year old mindsets are what truly deserive to be outlawed.

dont let something with no real relevance rule your life. those myths are these days far more harmful than helpful..

despite the core ideals that could benifit socity if you just lost the bullshit.

That's crazy talk! Lucifer is a bad-arse name. I mean, it may carry some weirdness, but probably the same as calling a kid Dante, or Mohammed, or any number of names with religious leanings.
Mohammed is actually a really common name, and a ton of names common in the Western world have their roots in Christianity.

I, personally, feel bad for a friend's cousin who was named "Grendel" because their parents totally didn't do any research.

But yeah, with Lucifer having multiple meanings and New Zealand being secular, I feel it should pass.
Though I would definitely question the parents who named their child as such...

Still, no Baron or Duke?
Why no titular names?
I mean, I get it, but I don't get it.

Some I understand, ranks like General or legal titles like Judge or Justice. But New Zealand doesn't have any Dukes or Barons (disregarding it's ties to the UK) so it's not like it'd cause any confusion.

That doesn't make any sense! Lucy was the guy's name before he went bad.
I thought he was Sammael (spelling?) before he fell.

Phoenix Jones (the chicago super hero),
I'm very insulted, he is from the great city of Seattle, not Chicago. Takin' away one of the pacific Northwest's ledgends... :p

I think this is a rather silly thing to do, the idea that parents can't name their children something just because its a little weird is just plain stupid.

Lucifer is actually a pretty sick name. I'd never name my kid it, but theres no reason people shouldnt be allowed to - especially if the reasoning is to save them from ridicule, because as you pointed out there are dozens of names that will get far more ridicule than such a bad ass name ever would. Kid's surnames are also just as much, if not more so, likely to be ridiculed at younger ages

I gotta say, Lucifer is a pretty awesome name. Me, I'd try to pick a name that doesn't have biblical roots like 90 bloody percent of everyone, but if I had to pick one, Lucifer would definitely be near the top of the list ;)

Why the hell was the name " Duke " banned? I can understand some of the others, but not that one.

OT: Batman.
Well, like the others, it is a title. It perhaps was more relevant in feudal times, when a duke was a rather high-ranking lord in the feudal system. Sort of akin to a modern-day governor. Still, they also have King and Knight banned, so its banning isn't entirely incongruous.

Just to piss people off, I'm gonna call my kid "Lucifer Dante the Second", and move to New Zealand, and make him assist the most religious school in all the region, feed him steroids, dye his hair black, make him wear red contact lenses and teach him to swear in Latin.

PRICE-LESS.

That's a lot of work for trolling. I salute you!

OT: Can you name a girl Lilith [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lilith]? Because if so, they need to rethink this. I can understand not allowing you to name your kid Judge, but Lucifer? Why? Just don't allow them to name their kid Satan.

I think you can call them Jezebel, so there's probably no problem with Lilith. I wonder if you can call your twins Cain and Abel?

Able to!

YEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAHHHHHH!

OT: Beyond naming children curse words, I fail to see what interest the state has in this. Then again, it could just be NZ law.
