San Fransisco. Because it has cool stuff. And the US is one country but its various states function a lot like a group of countrys in which case California would be the most powerful. Although that would suggest LA as the capital.

If we were going to have a city for the whole world, something custom would be set up rather than plopping a couple World HQ buildings down in an already crowded city. The US built Washington, Brazil built Brasilia, the Romans built Constantinople, and even the Mongols put up Karakorum.

As for location, my bet is that it would be put somewhere neutral and distant, both to avoid the perception of preferring one country over another, as well as to ensure plenty of room for the construction. Ideally, some under-inhabited island or archpelago near shipping lanes.

So my pick is the Andaman Islands, just between Thailand and India.

I'll assume we get an entire country set up for the capital city. Like What Australia did for Canberra or Italy did for the Vatican. Make a country filled with pretty much the U.N. That's what they should do, its not what they will, its what they should though...
Almost certainly this. Otherwise, I'd say New York. It almost already is (for finance and for the UN).

Nowhere. Because of America.

If it's a city outside of the US, the US will be annoyed, possibly belligerent.

If it's a city IN the US, it'll be the wrong city for half of it's population, resulting in at the very least a Tea-party-style movement, at worst a Civil war, that will inevitably result in a world war (because they capital city of the world is under attack).

It should be in Antarctica, considering nobody already owns it. That way it can be declared a neutral zone without dispute.

The capitol city of the earth would be on an artificial island floating out in the middle of the ocean. Because no way other nations would agree on a foreign city as a global capitol. Unless it was in Canada.

A simple question - if all the nations of Earth united under one world government, which city would be the capital of the planet, and why?

I've outlined a few of the world's major cities in the poll already, but do feel free to choose "other" if you feel none of the options fit, and explain your choice.

Keep in mind that the city must be on Earth - we're assuming a united planet, but not that we've begun establishing colonies elsewhere in the solar system/galaxy.
