Since no one would be happy being ruled from anywhere besides their own country I say we build a sweet ass space station and let it be ruled from there. It is neutral ground and fucking badass anyway. Think Citadel from Mass Effect.

Greenwich, just because of the way the time zones are.

I haven't given it much thought, but that seems right.

You shouldn't have a capital because that's silly.
If we would unify into a coalition then we should just be labeled "UNOE" (United nations of earth)
Because that would make people jelous for obvious reasons.
But if you had to pick one.
THen I would pick the moon.
Nobody owns the moon.

So tired.

Also I am pretty sure Washington DC. is America's capital, not New York.

You are correct, but New York City is where the UN building is located. Honestly it would make more sense for it to be in a historically neutral nation like Switzerland, sure the US formed the League of Nations and the UN and came up with the idea, but if you're trying to get leaders from nations like North Korea there it seems awfully slanted.
I do believe that the UN building is considered neutral territory. I think it officially belongs to no nation. Also, World Leaders and their representatives are generally given Diplomatic Immunity. Hell, I think even the children of diplomats are given diplomatic immunity. Basically Kim Jong-il could walk into the New York subway with a shotgun, shoot someone in the stomach, and the local police couldn't do anything about it. At least, not until the UN stripped him of his immunity.

Unfortunately, that dream won't be realized until space travel is much much more simple. Mundane even. So I wouldn't bet on a World Capital in space.

On second thought, we might just accomplish that before we have world peace on the level that we would have one government. So maybe...

Good God,

You lot are really slating us Brits aren't you? Okay, so we have a "colourful" history to say the least, but that's no need to call us pompous as someone did earlier.

Every nation on this planet has something to be ashamed of in their long history, so don't just narrow it down to one please :p

Okay, capitol city for a unified Earth...I personally think that if the world does unite under one banner, all the countries should be involved for building a massive platform over some ocean where it would be classed as neutral territory.

But until that day comes, we can all continue boasting over who's tribe has the biggest stick.

London, for one reason and one reason alone.......GMT.

wasn't that decided just so england would go metric along with the rest of Europe?

when it comes to a world capital, it cannot be in any specific country (unless you got EVERYONE to agree on a particular city), plus, if earth was united, countries now would now just be regions of one large country, so they would be forced to decide a neutral area to create one.

Shanghai. 21 million people: a centre for world economy. Great public transport... 2 hours from where I live.
Yeah, but a world capitol should have a certain reputation and fame about it.

When people thing "World's most well known cities" they think things like Tokyo, London, and NYC

First city on the moon should be the Capital of Earth, just for shits and giggles at the irony.

Yeah, but everyone knows NYC is more well known.

While I suck at history, I do believe NYC was actually the capital at some point, and it was moved south at some point due to some sort of negotiation with southern states (perhaps around the civil war)

Feel free to laugh at how wrong I probably am with that statement, I'm going to go look it up now and see.

EDIT: Well, I was right about it being the capital, but it was changed way before the civil war

Sydney. The climate is better than all those places you listed.

Also, you just discriminated against everyone south of the equator. Hang your head in shame.

The city so nice they named it twice. It is a cultural and economic superpower, as well as already having a big number of people.

I think Rome.. Besides it being one of the most important places in human history, it holds significant power already, if a world government was to form there it would be convenient as there are enough large buildings there that they wouldn't have to build a world parliament and what better place to establish a world government than the place that has held such massive power in the past.

I think i have been playing a bit too much Brotherhood...

i'm going with jerusalem, because i believe that a united earth could only happen if people stood up and acknowledged that the majority of the world's religions preach the same thing, so we can have one central faith and be happy together. since jerusalem is the central location of the three biggest faiths in the world, it's a logical political center of the world because religion is unfortunately inseparable from government-people legislate based on their beliefs.

I'll assume we get an entire country set up for the capital city. Like What Australia did for Canberra or Italy did for the Vatican. Make a country filled with pretty much the U.N. That's what they should do, its not what they will, its what they should though...
Pretty sure that the ACT isn't it's own country.
I think you're just being nit-picky. That's obviously not the point, the point that he's trying to make is that we'd probably set up an entire territory (my money's on somewhere in Europe) specifically for being an international hub city, where everything connects and where everyone is a citizen. Something like that.

I would be disguised if any of the choices listed were used. I'd vote for Zurich or somewhere else without gigantic bias.

The moon would be the coolest spot for it, however.
