Alice Springs.

Mostly to get all the politicians in the middle of a desert away from everyone else.

Too bad there isn't any land at 0 Latitude and 0 Longitude...we could put the capital city there.

Personally...I think Zurich would be a better capital of a united Earth. We would need the capital of Earth to be neutral in all respects so it cannot be said to be leaning in favor of one nation or another.

May I suggest somewhere in Canada? Somewhere peaceful that the diplomats would see as a stark comparison to their home cities. Somewhere with enough natural beauty to remind people of that other side of earth, that not-a-city-yet side.

I voted New York, but now that I think about it, someplace in Central Africa is probably the best (assuming we unite the planet and get all our problems sorted out.) It's relatively close to Africans and Americans, while staying very accessible to Eurasians. Someplace in Ethiopia or around there would be close to everyone, and also has a plus of being symbolic as the origin of humans. You could have a rail route going up the Nile to connect with Europe, and one going along the bottom of Arabia to go straight into Asia. As a plus-plus, it could be extremely close to the equator, making a space elevator from the capital a breeze.

Other ideas include: somewhere in Iraq or Iran, or Afghanistan.

SPAYCE!
If it's a truly united nation, then it'd have to be a neutral city.
Either by removing a city from its current nation or building a new one on neutral ground.
Of course, there's no neutral ground left, so it'd have to be a floating city in the ocean or an outpost in THE VAST REACHES OF SPAYCE!

Why does there have to be a capitol anyway?

I'd have to say Rio De Janeiro cos it already has a giant human welcoming everyone(terrestrial or otherwise), religious significance aside.

London, for one reason and one reason alone.......GMT.

Accra (in Ghana), for one reason and one reason alone.......GMT.

:/
GMT = Greenwich Mean Time

The bit in bold is pretty important. Although Casablanca sounds cool too!

Are you serious? Muslims in NYC? Check. Did you hear anything about the Muslim community center being put up near the WTC site?
That was pretty much what I was referencing. This would be the centre that has been violently protested ever since it was proposed?

That's not exactly widespread cultural integration.

You'd be hard-pressed to find any city on Earth with widespread cultural integration. There aren't many Amazonians or Australian Aborigines in NYC, either (or in many other cities). And the US tendency towards segregationism doesn't really lend itself towards actual multiculturalism, either.

But, much more importantly, NYC has been the news rather a lot lately due to (some residents) being downright hostile to Arabs in general and Muslims specifically. Which was my actual point.

Basra is 95% Muslim. How is that diverse or important? You might as well make Skokie, Illinois the capitol.
Basra is right at the heart of Mesopotamia, the cradle of civilisation. The place where we developed Agriculture, Writing and Religion, and many of the other things that are at the heart of human society.

I'd say that makes it a pretty damn important place, actually.
(and as a result would be nicely appropriate for a World Capital, in a 'going back to our roots' way)

It's near the middle of the largest continent (Eurasia), with quick access to the most densely populated parts of the planet. So the location is pretty decent geographically, too.

I also said it used to be the Garden of Eden which is a bit of a stretch, but feel free to object solely the grounds that they're all Muslim...

Paris. That's what it was in Star Trek. At least that's where the president lived. That is all the reason I need to choose a capital city.

Dubai. Because it shouldn't be in the States.
Why not the States? Dubai is a good choice (though I heard that it will be sunk within a few years).

OP: I'm thinking Chicago (because I just love that city, and it is a huge center for culture and industry).

London, because, well, I'm English and that's probably the reasoning other people used.

Yeah, the middle east and Africa were the cradles of civilization. My point is that now, as in right now, they aren't that interesting anymore. If we're talking about a World Capitol basing it on some historical significance (and nothing else) doesn't seem very important, to me anyway. NYC is a cultural landmark unmatched by any other city on earth. It has significant populations of several western and eastern European communities, as well as a ton of people from South America, a large amount of Chinese and Japanese, and plenty of African (Americans pc blah blah). What other city has that kind of status and importance? What other city has produced so many important cultural heroes? What other city is more important in the post 9/11 world (ie the attacks on the city itself).

In Twilight Imperium (best board/tabletop game I've ever played, think Sins of a Solar Empire), New Moscow is the capital of Jord (which is either Earth under a new name, or some new planet that conveniently happens to be close enough to Earth to also be a home planet).

I would think the Capital of Earth would be some hard-to-find place in the ocean (like Atlantis, only real), and they'd rule the world through propaganda and lolcats.

So the invading aliens know where to target.
