Well it should obviously be Belfast, Northern Ireland. We'd sort this recession shit right out.

Luna City

The city would be placed on the moon. That way nobodies original lands or territories are taken away and so that one country doesnt have to feel like there being ruled by another country.

Either Beijing, which is the capital city of the largest percentage of the world population, or London, because that's where the last "worldwide empire" was ruled from.

EDIT: yellingatpixels, as someone who lives very near Toronto, let me tell you that you don't want the world ruled from there. No one would agree on anything, and we'd have the Pillsbury dough-boy as the mayor of the world.
waddya mean, the mayor of Torranna is a good ol' Canadian boy. Wad are ya? Some bike ridin' pinko commie??

(for everyone else: this is a Canadian inside joke)

Either London, Paris or Brussels. Although I'd like it more if they built the capital city somewhere, where there isn't much already. I'd just want it to be in Europe.

Andover! My home town!

No reason in particular, it just seems as good a place as any...

WE SHALL BUILD A NEW LAND IN THE MIDDLE OF THE SEA OR MAYBE IN THE SKY. Either will do. Or both.

Amsterdam.
Then, when the evil aliens land, we will be able to give them pot and avoid a galactic war.

A shiny new city in Kenya, Africa.

With good access to the spaceport on Kilamanjaro, for the alien overlords who conquered us and forced us to unite.

San Francisco. It was a good enough capital for the United Federation of Planets, it should be enough for just the Earth.

Are you serious? Muslims in NYC? Check. Did you hear anything about the Muslim community center being put up near the WTC site?
That was pretty much what I was referencing. This would be the centre that has been violently protested ever since it was proposed?

That's not exactly widespread cultural integration.

You'd be hard-pressed to find any city on Earth with widespread cultural integration. There aren't many Amazonians or Australian Aborigines in NYC, either (or in many other cities). And the US tendency towards segregationism doesn't really lend itself towards actual multiculturalism, either.

But, much more importantly, NYC has been the news rather a lot lately due to (some residents) being downright hostile to Arabs in general and Muslims specifically. Which was my actual point.

Basra is 95% Muslim. How is that diverse or important? You might as well make Skokie, Illinois the capitol.
Basra is right at the heart of Mesopotamia, the cradle of civilisation. The place where we developed Agriculture, Writing and Religion, and many of the other things that are at the heart of human society.

I'd say that makes it a pretty damn important place, actually.
(and as a result would be nicely appropriate for a World Capital, in a 'going back to our roots' way)

It's near the middle of the largest continent (Eurasia), with quick access to the most densely populated parts of the planet. So the location is pretty decent geographically, too.

I also said it used to be the Garden of Eden which is a bit of a stretch, but feel free to object solely the grounds that they're all Muslim...
Yeah, the middle east and Africa were the cradles of civilization. My point is that now, as in right now, they aren't that interesting anymore. If we're talking about a World Capitol basing it on some historical significance (and nothing else) doesn't seem very important, to me anyway. NYC is a cultural landmark unmatched by any other city on earth. It has significant populations of several western and eastern European communities, as well as a ton of people from South America, a large amount of Chinese and Japanese, and plenty of African (Americans pc blah blah). What other city has that kind of status and importance? What other city has produced so many important cultural heroes? What other city is more important in the post 9/11 world (ie the attacks on the city itself).

if somehow the world became one nation and they had place a capital city down... why would they pick a city that could create enough controversy that the one nation idea gets hosed?

London, because English is the most used language in the world and England came before America.

If such a thing would occur, I would rather we reclaim a whole island to build a city on. Too much acrimony would arise from choosing an existing city. However a land that belongs to no nation can, in theory, belong to all of them. The city would, from its very soil, be a testament to mankind's new-found unity and technological prowess. Built and designed by the best minds around the world, it could be a powerful symbol even if the current World Government were ever to fall. That is, if we could ever set aside our differences to set up a planetary government and then succeed at this feat of engineering. A new World Wonder for a new age, built by Man to belong to everyone.
