Why would a cat lower itself to fetching?

Dogs live about 15 years.
Cats can live to be 20~30 easily.
Dogs will lick your face.
Cats will also lick your face.
Dogs and cats lick their butts frequently.
Dogs will crap on your carpet without a thought.
Cats will risk it's life in a hurricane before they'll crap outside of the litterbox in the house.
Dogs will settle down next to you and do nothing.
Cats will settle down next to you and purr.
Dogs will eat anything, including stuff that will kill them.
Cats will almost never eat anything dangerous.
Dogs will want to play constantly.
Cats can entertain themselves.
Dogs will not kill vermin.
Cats will kill vermin.
Dogs will be trained to do anything with little real effort.
Cats train YOU. Not even in Soviet Russia do you train cats.

I have three problems with dogs.

1. They require more maintenance. Cats don't wake you up in the middle of the night to force you to let them outside just so they can pee. Cats don't need to be walked. (Though, contrary to what *everyone* thinks, some of them will in fact walk on a leash! I owned a cat that did this. He also played fetch.)

2. They smell. If I had a nickel for every time a dog lover told me that I'm wrong and that I'm just meeting dirty dogs, I'd be rich, but I have met precisely two types of dogs who didn't smell out of the scads of dogs I've seen. One was a single dog that was bathed once a day, with soap and everything. The other was basically "the entire breed 'husky,'" and I don't know what it is about huskies, but they actually manage not to smell. I don't care if your poodle is professionally groomed -- it smells. It does. I have a very, very good sense of smell. Trust me, you're just used to it.

On the other hand, I have found cat box deodorizers that actually work, and that's the only part of a cat that smells if you're doing anything right.

3. I refuse to care for any creature that forces me to touch its poop. This includes babies, and it's one of the main reasons I also would never care for an infant. I don't scoop cat litter boxes; I just pull the whole bag out and toss it. It may be a waste, but I refuse to make close contact with the fecal matter of any animal. I can scoop horse manure with a shovel, sure, but don't make me reach down, with only a thin layer of plastic between my hand and the target, and pick up a pile of dog crap.

I live with three cats, and I love them all, but when I move out and if I want to find a pet of my own, I always thought I'd want a husky.

OT: Dog's--including puppies--do smell. But husky's don't. One of my aunts kept husky's (huskies sp?) all her life and they were the most pleasant big dogs I've ever known.

@Saladfork: You couldn't go better than a husky if you want a big dog but be prepared to "Play" and walk it all the time! They're not as bad as beagles or border collies but they're energetic creatures that need regular exercise.

Which only serves as additional proof of cats' superiority, of course. Unless you over-feed a cat and lock it up where it can't get any exercise cats don't require constant supervision.

Huh, this thread has reached two pages and no-one seems to have posted this yet, maybe I missed it somewhere but I'll post it anyway:

2:16 is probably my favourite bit.

I actually prefer small, smart dogs to other dogs or any type of cat because some of them reach my level of intelligence they're just more responsive in my opinion.

I just have to say thank you. Those two videos are the funniest things I have seen in quite a long time. I laughed so hard I had a coughing fit.

On topic, I absolutely love both cats and dogs, but I honestly think dogs are better. The golden retriever I had years ago was the best pet I've ever owned. The day she passed was one of the saddest days of my life.

They're both awesome in their own ways. Dogs are kinda like a dopey, easily-excited best friend that you can't help but instantly love while cats are evil geniuses that you go along with for fear of what they'll do to you if you refuse.

Most terrier breeds will equal or outdo cats for killing vermin... especially when it comes to larger vermin like rats, rabbits (they're declared vermin in Australia) and door to door salespeople. The best vermin killing breeds, all terriers, share 3 common characteristics - extremely energetic, fearless and UTTERLY FUCKING MENTAL.

Mate of mine used to wonder what a cross of Mini Jack Russel and Staffy would be like... then he bred one (well, the dogs bred the puppy)... Biscuit was a fucking force of nature, mayhem and destruction.

Took him up to another mate's farm when there was a mouse plague and Biscuit was like a woodchipper on legs.

As someone who owns a cat and works with dogs and cats on a daily basis (I'm a veterinary technician) I tend to prefer dogs. I love my cat and I'm sure cats can be very nice, however, look at it through a vet tech's eyes. Cats...can be scary.


Ok, most cats aren't THAT bad, but I can name 3 at my clinic who are (as well as several more who may not be THAT bad but still have the potential to be scary). I also have a scar above my wrist where my cat redirected his aggression towards another cat on me (he's big and I didn't have a blanket, jacket, or gloves within reach in the stairway. Tried to scruff him and pin him up on the wall until he would calm down and he raked his canines half across the circumference of my arm). There are dogs who are scared/aggressive enough to bite your face off on sight, but they tend to be fewer than cats. Cats are predisposed to not like trips to the vet. They don't like being out of their territory and they feel vulnerable. Not to mention cats in general don't like to be manhandled (my boss, who is the vet, can't even clip his own cats' nails without a muzzle and gloves because even as 3 month old kittens they would flail and scream, especially the female. She's such a colossal spazz x_x).

Also, just tossing it out there as a little relevant "fact of the day". Cats, pound for pound, have a worse bite than dogs. With dogs, the concern is trauma. With cats, it's infection. Cat teeth are sharper and more needle-like, and when they bite, their teeth go deep. As they come out, the wound closes itself up. Without proper cleaning or antibiotics, the bite becomes a sealed site for infection. It's not unheard of for people to lose fingers/hands or even die from being bitten by a dirty kitty mouth that leads to a systemic infection.

In short, prefer dogs. Cats are great, but on average tend to be scarier.

(this entire post was done with my asshole cat sitting on my arms and his butt in my face. Yes, I love you, but I hate when you do that x_x)

Cats aren't as intelligent as dogs, and as much as you might say your cat loves you and couldn't live without you, they are aloof by nature and pretty much stick around because of guaranteed food and shelter. Dogs are just better pets and companions.

Anyway, cats are pretty great, but I personally prefer dogs. They're much friendlier then cats. That's about all I have to say on the matter.

I'm afraid you've started a debate between people with far too much time on their hands and big ideas about the worth of their own various opinions. It sort of happens on the internet. Well, this place isn't youtube or anything, but people do get out of hand in these situations and get carried away.

For what it's worth, I just can't resist cats when they're at their cutest, or are doing something interesting. My old cat used to really miss me when I was gone for a while, and used to go so far as jumping into my arms, or to get on my back and curl herself around my shoulders and then purr like crazy. Really sweet old thing, but batty as blazes. She used to get overstimulated when I played with her, and just went batsh*t crazy and cranky for a while. I'm not as partial to dogs, because I see them as being high maintenance.

While I do see your point, as I've seen many a video like the one you referenced to, I just cannot refrain from calling you out on what absolute bullshit "without getting the love in return" is. Cats are incredibly loving, and they are happy to see you when you come home. I know mine are, but then again, I don't suck at raising them, unlike the person who commented on that video (presuming he was actually serious).

Both are excellent animals, and frankly the poll is rather useless, because which of the two is "better" depends on what kind of relationship you're looking for.
