Has anyone seen Miller's Crossing? It was a great film by the Coens that never became a huge hit, unlike Fargo and the Big Lebowski.

Off-Topic here but someone else needs to vote "never heard of them" for it to make a penis. (I voted no)

Extremely good, but not the best in the world.

Oh come on, are you serious? Apart from Mulholland Drive, and the first series and a half of Twin Peaks, David Lynch is a complete hack that pretentious film studies/media students think is a genius because he refuses to explain the bullshit he makes.

(Despite hating most of his stuff though, Twin Peaks was superb, until they solved the Laura Palmer case and all that shit with Josie turning into a drawer knob happened).

Violently in disagreement, I absolutely hated No Country for Old Men, Ridley Scott is my favourite by miles.
Um why the hate for No Country?
Boring, senselessley gorey and had a crappy ending, all imo though.

The Coen Brothers are my two favourite movie directors in the world. Do you agree with me? if not, please tell us who you think is better.
I can't disagree they're your favourite....but I'd say the best director is almost certainly Spielberg or Hitchcock in terms of achievements, scope and professionalism. The Coens make films that either leave me completely cold (Fargo), vaguely amused (Big Lebowski) or very impressed (No Country). But in general I wouldn't say they're nearly as accomplished as the big S just because they've no exactly taken on technically ambitious projects.

Best (in my opinion): Probably Spielberg
Favourite: George A Romero (with the exception of Land and Diary of the Dead - shudder.)

I'd never say Romero is a particularly talented director but he has directed some of my favourite films in terms of fun.

Roll call of genius: Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead, Day of the Dead, Knightriders, Season of the Witch, Monkey Shines and the Dark Half.

Sorry. Gotta go with Spielberg, James Cameron, Tarantino, and Stanley Kubrick over these guys. I don't think I've even seen one of their movies.

I completely disagree. Fritz Lang is the best director by miles. Not knowing who he is and what he did is complete ignorance of film history and culture.

Sorry, you awoke the flame in me a little bit there, I'm usually a really nice guy, honest!

I think my issue with Lynch is because I thought SOME of his stuff was really good. It would be far easier for me to just ignore it if I didn't like any of it. but did you really, truthfully enjoy watching Inland Empire.

Really?

I will say that it was not the greatest film ever made and it was not one of his bests
But i did enjoy it slightly

Love 'em but I have to give it to Christopher Nolan and the dynamic duo that he forms with his brother.

Sure he has a lot more movies to make before they can have the same numbers as some of the other candidates out there. But overall, there's just something to solid about nearly everything that man does.
Sure, Insomnia is the weak point there but other than that most of it is just gold.

And I am looking forward to future projects

OT: I thought Lebowski, Fargo and Burn After Reading were hilarious, No Country was brilliant but very oppressive and I haven't seen The Hudsucker Proxy, but it's on TV this week and from the adverts it looks pretty dumb.

What have I missed? Was Barton Fink them?

Like 'em, sure, but George Lucas and Steven Spielberg got their hooks deep in my heart, those crazy guys and their excellent, excellent films.

I would say Kevin Smith, but he's definitely a better writer than he is a director.

I prefer Danny Boyle, Jason Reitman, David Fincher and at some extent Tarantino who just won some major points with Inglorious Basterds.

However, I'll give my best director awards to Todd Haynes. He made my the perfect film with my Bob Dylan's life.
