It's not like I'm completely immune to sexuality, but I buy my games because they look interesting to me and I want to play them. Not because I see that there's a hot character in them. Not really wanting sex from my games haha.

I won't lie, I've bought some games because of their sex appeal (i.e. Dead or Alive, Soul Calibur). I would be lying if I said "I just play it for the combos." With that said, the truth is that I don't factor sex appeal very often.

So Escapists, it's your turn to confess.
The sex appeal catches my attention, but in the end it never is the reason I buy games, Although i do have to confess that "girl power" is a factor into buying my games, for example Heavenly sword main character' barely there bottoms kept together with wishful thinking was one of the reasons I hesitated to but the game, until I looked at the actual game play saw that you get to play TOW girls than can kick ass, and that's rare in video games. (besides M of course)

Never.

I'm gay. A women wearing a shoelace and two shards of cloth just makes me worry how cold she's going to get.
hahahaha. Characters like that make me think they have weak defense, and health, so I never pick them unless I can customize the armor.

Zero. The sex appeal of video game characters is sometimes a welcome side-effect, though.

Funny thing is, I bought DOA 2:Hardcore for the PS2 for the game mechanics... it's a quick, technical fighter. When the volleyball game came out, I had to laugh... all of the women in those games are too exaggerated to be sexy.

Considering most male leads in games lately look exactly the same...probably not. Could be subconcious tho so who knows...

As for the sex scenes in Mass Effect 2. I'm not into aliens so that leaves me with...Jacob :< No thanks.

I buy it because people say it's a genuinely good game. If there's hot chicks in it, then that's a bonus.

Basically never. In the past I've been known for buying any game that sported a big pair of titties on the front, but I'm corrected my ways.

Nowhere near 50/50, but I will admit that I'm more likely to stop and look at a game's cover if it happens to have an attractive woman. I then actively realize I'm being enticed by it.

Never have, can't say I ever will. It sure as hell doesn't hurt the gaming experience, but its never even slightly impacted my choice on whether or not to actually purchase the game.

Where's your option for 'not at all'?

I buy my games for gameplay. Not sex appeal, graphics, achievements or anything else.

That's what real relationships are for.

[sub]OK maybe not the achievements bit...[/sub]

I wouldn't say rarely but it isn't often. I can be persuaded to spend money at times by the gratuitous display of the opposite sex and any man that denies that is a liar or gay.

I will say though, I don't seek it out.
That is a huge generalization.

None of the games I own were purchased based on sex appeal. Just naming games I've played recently, Portal 2, Bioshock, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Pokemon Black and White, Left 4 Dead 2, Minecraft...

I have never gone into a store, seen a game/sought out a game just because one of the characters was sexy. I don't get to buy games that often, I'd rather buy a game based on the story/gameplay versus chest physics.
Nope, it is just stating human nature. #1 rule of marketing is sex sells and it does, I work in sales. You know how many guys will buy something if the salesperson is a cute girl that flirts with them? Damn near every one of them. Either this poll is a bunch of people denying their natural impulses for the sake of a quiz. (Totally believable) OR We have found the most sexually indifferent group of people to ever migrate to one place on the net. 23.2% of 198 people will admit it plays a factor.

Here is the kicker, most of the people that voted in this poll is teenagers to mid twenties. That is most of the population on the escapist. The horniest males on the entire planet. And yet, 76.8% say it rarely, if EVER does. I think some people are lying.

When I was that age (hell, even now at 30) if I walked into a game store and saw this on the shelf:

I will reach for it guaranteed. Will I buy it? I don't know I have to investigate. But don't think for a minute that as I am turning it over to see the details on the back, I ain't thinking "Please be good, please be good, please be good." I am hoping she is in the menu screens and everywhere they can throw her in on a good racing game.
Don't even think I ain't grading it on a slight curve hoping that is the case. That is brutal honesty. I have picked that game up like a dozen times now in game shops before I look at the back and go "Oh yeah, that is that one I decided sucked" but when I see it I say "Oh yeah, there is that game with HER on the cover, what was on the back of that again?". I have never bought it but I have picked it up and gave it a once over quite a lot more than some other games that don't have something similar on the cover.

THAT is factoring in. I didn't buy it no. But I sure as hell considered buying it. That is factoring in. That is what the poll is asking and it does factor in sometimes. Even this made me pick it up:

But those anime chicks always look 12 and it disturbs me so she doesn't entertain me long. I was distracted by an ass being thrown in my face. But I looked at the back and considered it. That shit still managed to factor in and make me give the game a shot. I mean hey they are letting me know what I will be staring at through most of the game right? It had that going for it.

I don't believe for a second that all of the sexually "pure" saints found this thread and voted. I think people give themselves more credit than they care to admit to. Don't think that hearing about the sex scene in Mass Effect didn't chalk up a "+1" for me. Because I ain't gonna think for a minute that the crowd here didn't merit that in the "pros" section of their pro/con list for whether to buy or not.

Maybe you should read the posts again because most people are saying that the sex appeal DOES catch their attention, and yes we all picked up that game ,and studies that a** closer, and then 5 minutes later we turned the box read it and put it back. But if you look at the gaming market, the top selling and classic games are not sex related or dominated in the game play.

sex is a major selling factor in all other industries, but barely a minority in the gaming industry. Controversy on the other hand does sell, like the possibility of sex acts, and choosing non traditional relationships in rpgs.

Off-topic: I like that girl's hairstyle, and shoes but why does she look like a 12 year old? How much did that game sell anyways?

After shuffling through my video game library, I would have to say never. I bought Soul Calibur IV for the fighting and the opportunity to kick my brothers ass just like the old days, the other "features" are a side-show for the actual gameplay.

My stance on Duke Nukem Forever is a wait and see approach mainly out of caution, but I would feel more than a bit embarrassed to bring it home.

It's hardly a factor for me (I have Rule 34.com for that)

Record of Agrest War is pretty much the only game I bought based only on the sex appeal. (A fucking awesome mouse pad came with it)

I rented Bayonetta for the sex appeal I ended up buying it because it was an outstanding game.

I got into Soul Calibur before I even knew about the female characters.

I do own DOAX though.

Sex appeal is pretty much the deciding factor in what animes I watch. (That's why I never quite got into Full Metal Alchemist)
Interesting, I did the same thing with Bayonetta, I rented it, loved the game play, and story but didn't buy it do to the over-sex-appeal.

Actually, I've never even considered buying a game because of sex appeal. But being a heterosexual female, the game industry's not exactly gearing the sex appeal towards me anyway, haha.

Rarely. If i want to look at something with sex appeal, I have the internet and porn is relatively easy to get at on the internet.

I just got bayonetta on the cheap and I'd be lying if I said sex appeal played no factor in my decision. other than that I can't think of any where sex appeal made me want the game, in most cases it turns me off to games. I'm thinking of BMX XXX
