- first-degree relatives is 1 in 2

I'm no statistician but that makes it seem more like it's safer to hit your cousin. Sure, it's even safer to go tap a stranger who is unrelated.

What I'm getting at is, what constitutes "first degree" relative?

First Degree is your Mother, Father, Blood/Step Brother/Sister.

Step? I recall a few years back seeing a step- couple getting married in the US, one would assume they consumate. I suspect that you meant "half" (shared blood parent), but I wanted to clarify.
