Would you date a close relative?

First cousin ? definitely not, what are we? back to the 11th century ?

It's legal in many U.S. States and in several other countries I can think of?

There's a few in the US. Question is, do you care enough about society to be affected by how people react to it? I haven't thought about it, as I haven't any female cousins that I'd ever consider to be date-able (age), but, unless it's illegal, I see no issue with it beyond MAYBE social stigma.

On that note, social stigma tends to change on a whim, so I wouldn't take what society says to heart for the most part.

I do find one of my cousins as extremely attractive, but I mean in a mutual way, like you would feel if your sister is extremely pretty. I don't have any feeling for her other than those you normally would for your cousin.

OT: I don't think so. I had a cousin do the same to me (ie hit on me at a family function), however we are not blood related. It didn't feel weird at the time either cuz it was the first time we had met. In fact my Uncle and her mum weren't even married yet, so technically not even cousins.

I'm rather disappointed that such a liberal board who seems to be so accepting of relationships that would of been classified as 'gross' or 'wrong' years ago now turns around and does the same here without any substantive argument.

The only argument one can make against incestuous relationships is that they may produce defects in offspring. Seeing as we allow and even empathize with other unrelated couples who have inheritable genetic defects such a position is a double standard.

Sure. I've sometimes felt attracted to some of my relatives.

The question is, would they like me back?

Unfortunately, I don't keep in touch with my extended family as much as I'd like to. Hell, I hardly ever call my dad. So, developing a relationship would be tough if I ever tried to.

Haven't scientist already proven that all (europeans) share the same ancestor? (i thought it could all be traced back to 6 woman or something like that) so in a way we all enjoy incest to a certain degree.

I've never been a man to stand in the way of someone's hapiness (xcept maybe my own, har har..... /cry). So if you guys love eachother then who am I to try and block that? More importantly why should you care whether I or anyone else disaproves of your relation?

No, I wouldn't. Not because I really think there's anything wrong with dating a cousin, but I am just not built that way.

To all you people who talk about inbreeding: I am pretty certain that you can have a child with a first cousin without major trouble occuring. A cousin is over the inbreeding-line, if only barely. Now, if in your family there was a tendency that cousins got together, that would be prolematic, because there wouldn't be enough variety in the DNA after some time; but a couple of cousins dating every now and then throughout family history should be unproblematic.

Edit: I am really disappointed with all the people saying "No way, it's gross" without any further argumentation. There is no real reason to shun relationships between cousins.

Fun fact: I am writing this from my cousins' house/computer.

I would...Why? Because all the relatives i have in this country is not blood relatives. So i would go for it. Though all of the female relatives are younger then 10... And i dont want to go to prison.

Edit: Answer: If i would date a close blood relative? Maybe. But they all live on the other side of the planet.
