Simple question.
Which of these two websites do you find the most compelling to browse, and why?
http://www.cracked.com/
http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/HomePage
Aside from the general jokes of "You'll never come back from there." that I hear every time someone talks about these sites, I've been wondering about this since the Extra Credits episode on Game Compulsion/Addiction.
As Daniel stated in that video, "'Addiction' refers to the fundamental altering of brain chemistry, something which games have never been shown to do. No, no. What gaming is is compelling." Granted, he was talking about games, but websites can work the same way. So, if compulsion is the true motivator for why people say these sites will suck hours of your life away, then the second part of the question is, ?Why is it compelling to you??
For me, the first answer is ?Both.?
For the second part, TVTropes focuses on ways of writing fiction, which I find very fun to read about and understand. Plus, seeing how these tropes pop up in other shows I enjoy helps me draw conclusions about why I may like that show.
As for Cracked, I enjoy that site because after each of the articles, there always seems to be at least two more interesting ones I can jump to, and two more from those two. And thus the cycle continues.
So, which side do you fall on? Cracked or TVTropes? Answer seriously, and in the meantime, I?m going to see what laws all of you have broken before you even read this OP.
