Well admittedly I'm currentply playing my first ever campaign, but I'm a Gnome Wizard, Neutral Good, and I am loving it. At first I was completely useless, since Cantrips do pretty much nothing in battle (though they were slightly helpful in conversation). But once I started getting some other spells, I became pretty hardcore. I really enjoy it.

I'm considering casting Enlarge Person on myself, followed by a permanency spell so I can be a 6-foot tall gnome. Just 'cause that would be awesome.
Don't underestimate cantrips!

You are in a dark building with no lights.
You have ogres in the next room.
Your team all has darkvision.
You tell your team to close their eyes and cast light in the next room.
dispell the light and your team charges.

You just blinded an entire room of ogres because their darkvision will not come back into effect for another few minutes.

I've played Fighters in the past, but I plan on rolling a Cleric for my next character.. Because we don't have one, and I was a poorly spec'd Fighter.

Creative use of spells and diplomacy is awesome... And being a secret mastermind, very often just using the group for your own gain is even better =P
Some of our players try to do that...

Oddly enough, it usually gets the group killed. Or the group finds out... and kills the "mastermind."

Strange how people get persnickety when they are being used.

Most fun i had was with a lawful evil monk... yeah. But i have a chaotic neutral Fighter/Sorcerer i am playing right now which is great too.

Also i have to say that D&D is one of the lowlier form of pen&paper roleplaying games... much better out there (And all beware of 4th editions.. hell nothing is good in 4th edition, not even Shadowrun)
Do you have some recommendations as for better games?

I have played a few others with this group. You have to realize that it isn't WHAT we play, but HOW we play it. We always have fun, no matter what. That's the point.
Yes, of yourse. Most important are the players and the mood of the game. But some games help you doing that which you really want. I for example just LOVED Earthdawn for a bit of high-magic adventures with some hmm.... abstract campaigns. For some quickwitted, adventurous swashbuckling 7th Sea is the greatest. Broody plotting in a dark world: Vampire of course (second edition - its more depressing).

I even designed a few games myself - one based on a nightmare i once had. My players liked it (but not SOOOO much *g*)

I always say: rules and world go hand in hand. I don't care much for this ULTIMATELOLOL-EASY systems which get forcibly transplanted onto backgrounds like the D20 or GURPS. (but the Star Wars D20 System was pretty ok)

Oh.. and as you can see i played A LOT... i think i have tested more than 30 systems and played about seven or so pretty consistent. (Its my hobby for over 10 years) - Mostly The Dark Eye (i am german) and Shadowrun

Bard, Neutral Good.

Being a bard is fantastic, and a lot of fun to play. I have a tonne of music saved on my MP3 player so whenever i do something i play a song for effect. Destroying skeletons by playing Another one Bites the Dust, or sending a Giant to sleep through Britney spears makes for some fun playing XD

My preferred class is DM. I've been doing it for 17 years. If I'm actually playing, or have an NPC running with the group, I tend to go for wizards of the neutral good persuasion. Wizards rule because they have crazy amounts of versatility and they get some nice bonus feats (D&D 3.5 edition).

Whatever the party needs, at the moment, generally. Given the choice, I'd be a Chaotic Good warlock, or any Good alignment scout.

I find myself drawn to Paladins recently, though...

Cleric, Lawful Good.

I like being the support character, and every party needs a healer. But the beauty of a well-rolled and taken care of Cleric is the fact that you can also handle yourself if the fight comes to you as well.

I personally love the LARP version of Vampire the Masquerade. It lets you get so much done in a few hours of play and lets your pit yourself against other players for some backstabbing hilarity. And it doesn't require much in terms of knowledge and you can literally teach some one the basics and get them playing like a pro in like 30 minutes to an hour.
Wouldn't a LARP game make it a NON-paper and pencil game?
It's hard to explain, Vampire the Masquerade was written both ways, I think it started with a pencil paper based system, but there is a version where there are character based paper stats but they threw out the dice mechanic and instead use cards or rock paper scissors. It's not like you run around and hit each other with foam weapons and that means whatever part of you is hit is injured. There are stats and abilities which have actual values and you need to consult your character sheet. It just brings the board part of the game to more person to person based interactions.

Sad as many of my friends find it I've always wanted to try my hand at D&D. I even purchased a set of the 4E materials and an additional satchel which, to my delight, included the Black Dragon I wanted. It was only at this point I discovered that not only was the hobby much more costly (in terms of materials, books etc.) than I realised, but also...I had nobody to play it with. I kinda knew this beforehand but I was hoping I might find a chance somewhere- alas, to this day I've yet to play a game.

Heh, I never thought of that use. There have been some great uses for cantrips, that's for sure, they just rarely came into play during battle. I try to use them creatively sometimes, but I tend to get bad rolls when I try.

Sorcerer, either Chaotic Neutral, or Lawful Evil.

I like the fact that Sorcerers basically gain their power innately, and not through study.
If I'm playing just as myself, I'll go Chaotic Neutral, since I myself try to remain equal to everyone, but no one knows what I'm gonna do next. I'd go Lawful Evil, because I love roleplaying an evil, plotting mastermind.

...Of course, this is all gathered from the small amount of time I have played the game (Read: about 4 months), so I haven't tried any of the other combinations. I'd love to get back into playing the game, but I'd have to be the one who hosts it, and I have had no skills as a DM, and I don't think my step-dad would lend me his books.

...Also, I'm not familliar with all the jargon that goes around about "4th Edition" or whatever.

I once played in a shadowrun LARP... i was AWESOME (It was a one-shot event with fixed character in a lottery) I got to be an undercover cop in an illigal shadowrunner-bar and was gathering intelligence. Hell.. i got i think more than five people to confess to dozens of crimes, and took down two shady deals. It was just great, when after like three hours of play i just stood up and said: "No one MOVES, LONE STAR" and my two collegues stood up to and we began taking people out of the room. (But the damn illigal sorcerers escaped grml... GOD that evening was so much fun.

And yeah we had stats and could bolster tham with cards for some actions. But i used one of five cards: I could play them all with acting, never used my "gun" or such.

Why isn't Paladin on that list when they are the most unquestionably awesome class?!

Paladin Drakelius Des Morte, Lawful Good alignment.

You sound like me>_>

I don't haave a particular class or race, but I do tend to make Chaotic Neutral charahcters that are usually hyper prepared to the point of breaking the DM's encounters to tiny tiny pieces. Which is why I hate being stuck in a extra-dimensional prison with limited resources. *Goes off grumbling about literally losing their only crowbar to Cthulhu*

I played a race/class combination that just seemed to work out to be interesting. Gold Dragon monk with the vow of poverty. It was quite interesting to say the least.
