The world is a turbulent thing, there have always been great natural disasters.
There were severe earthquakes hundreds of years ago, thousands even. Floods, cyclones, locust swarms, volcanic eruptions. You name it.
Earth is unstable, nothing is certain. The only reason these current disasters are getting any press is because people are now associating it with the whol 2012 doomsday nonsense. And they forget that there wasn't a doomsday theory hundreds of years ago, but there were still natural disasters.

Only read the first page, too tired to read the other two, so maybe someone already mentioned this: but the Mayan calendar "ends" in 2012 in the same way ours do every year, it restarts and gets called a "bak-tun"(sp).

I vaguely recall Neil Degrasse Tyson giving a speech on this, one line stuck with me, went something like:
"These people will tell you that the sun, earth and moon will come into perfect alignment with the center of the universe on December 21st 2012.
And that's true.
What they don't tell you, is that this happens EVERY year, on December 21st..."

The Mayan calendar is just that - a calendar. Guess what happens in 2012? It starts over. Just like what happens after December 31, we start over again in January.

And the Mayans didn't disappear, their descendants still live in Mexico. Their old cities were abandoned for probably very mundane reasons - disease, war, strife, religious revolution, food shortages, invaders, who knows what.

I think I'd leave the city life behind too if you started sacrificing pedestrians en mass to the sun god. The were probably like, "Whelp, fuck that, I'm out. Give Quetzalcoatl my best, we're taking our chances in the jungle. Peace.", and never looked back.

Could be indeed. But cant be sure. And unfortunately people are gullible.
Specially if there are psoters up everywhere and a lot of talk. And they end up just believing the hype and wont even go and try to look up some facts and see how true
it all is in the end.

And in all fairness, the crime rates could not go up that much from where they already are.
