In short, Richards let himself get angry and played his audience the wrong way.
Yep. And I think tosh did the same thing, as we're seeing with the unfolding backlash. Humor is best when it's subtle, not as a blunt instrument for people with privilege to use to get other people to shut up.
Not really. The show itself was a success. This one specific person got mad, but considering Tosh's audience I imagine that most of them walked out satisfied. Tosh did the professional thing: made a pithy remark in line with the rest of the show and moved on.

I'm not convinced a show that generates bad publicity is a "success" by any standard.

Please, tell me what it feels like to be a woman walking down the street at night when all of a sudden you see a man walking towards you. Describe the feeling of tension, and suspicion. The feeling you get when you realize that you cannot even walk down the street and have a sense of security, simply because you were born a woman.
When you hear your own mom describing these feelings, it begins to hit home.
I imagine it's not too dissimilar to the feeling I get when I'm walking down the street at night and I see a group of men or even just one particularly large man walking towards me.

Women may be more likely to be the victim of sexual crime (at least outside of prison) but men are much more likely to be the victim of violent crime.

The idea of BRONIES defending the use of gang rape joke to shut up a woman who had a legit complaint is almost as shocking as when I found out that there were Nazi bronies...
Oh god the pain...

Some heckler put downs are hilarious.

Don't worry, none are offensive....
No, I love me some heckler put-downs. But what Tosh said wasn't clever, it was just stupid. "I hope something horrible happens to you!" That's not a joke, that's a desperate cry for attention. That's Tosh saying "Look at me, I'm so edgy, I don't even have to say anything clever for people to love me!"

Would you say the same thing about the black man the guy who played Kramer directed similar hate at? If not, why not?

EDIT: And, FYI, the context of the comedy club doesn't do anything to erase the context of privilege, and I'm not sure why you think it would.
Privilege? Privilege?! What, do you think rape is a crime that only happens to women? Men are automatically in a position of power over women and can rape any woman if they chose to? Women are the only rape victims ever and men are never traumatized by rapes from women? What the fuck is wrong with you?! Not only are you making a completely retarded point, but you're also comparing two completely different situations that have very, VERY little do with each other! Stop typing. Please. You've already proven you have no fucking idea what you're talking about.
Back in the real world, rape is, yes, a hate crime primarily directed against women by men. And male privilege is very much a thing in our society.

Fake edit: on a side note, is it just me or has the Escapist been getting a little r/mensrights around the edges these last few weeks?
1. Rape is not hate crime, it's just a crime. A hate crime is a crime directed at someone based on if they are a member of a certain social group. There are gender-based hate crimes, but rape is usually committed because the rapist is fucking sick, NOT because he or she hates women or men.

2. "Primarily directed against women" is kind of accurate, but that description does NOT exclude men as rape victims and completely invalidates your own point that rape victims are just women.

3. Male privilege does exist, but it's largely about pay or social issues, NOT FUCKING RAPE. "Men get raped less because they hold a slight advantage in today's society." Are you kidding me? You cannot be this dumb.

I called it a "success" in the sense that the majority of the audience was satisfied, in order to contrast with Michael Richard's failed act. Both generated bad publicity, but only one had people laughing at the jokes. In this sense, Tosh performed his duties admirably.

SLIGHT Advantage?
Try making a quarter more on average, and holding most positions of power in this country's government and corporations. If you're so freaking BLIND not to see the sheer power advantage that exists in being male in our society, then I'm gonna bet that you really liked the "Beat up Anna Sarkeesian" game, huh?
Also, when the hell was rape not a social issue.
I'd love to hear you say this crap IRL, or in a cop's face.

Not mutually exclusive. The sort of rape he referenced (men against woman because she challenged them) is definitely a hate crime.

If you don't understand what a man in a room full of men singling out a woman and joking about gang raping her in order to silence her has to do with male privilege, I'm not entirely sure what I can do to help you.

To joke about a topic is to poke fun at it, the idea being to rob it of it seriousness. Nothing should be off limits to joke about, joking about them is not the same as threatening them. I don't think rape jokes, or multiple different jokes that fall under the 'bad taste' or 'dark humor' categories, are very funny.

In this case however, Tosh really pulled a Kramer. The fact is he is just not a funny guy and tries to get some shock laughs, that's his entire deal, when somebody called him on that his natural instinct was to use the same tactic. It just falls apart and leaves him in this mess. The fucking imbecile.

A legit complaint that she shouted out in the middle of a crowded theater that was filled with people who paid good money to see a show. She deserved what she got. I don't care if she's offended by rape jokes, because I get that. I don't particularly like them either, but I don't ruin other people's fun to voice that opinion.

And no, I'm not a "men's rights" activist. I recognize men have certain advantages in society, that much is true. But claiming rape is a hate crime against women completely ignores the men who have been victims of rape, which is to me a LOT more offensive than making rape jokes, because now you aren't just making light of it, you're pretending it doesn't exist, which is fucked up. So yea, most rapes happen to women, sure, but that doesn't invalidate the ones that happen to men, and they do happen more often than you would think.

But I am amused that you thought Bronies were somehow above offensive jokes. Like some children's cartoon somehow makes people transform into better people. That's a good one, that is.

How did you get to the point that the room was "full of men?" Comedy routines are often popular date events, and Tosh himself has a sizable female following. This wasn't some rally for men to assert their power over women where the one woman in the whole room had the courage to stand up to him, this was a comedy show that she interrupted and was therefore made to shut up in a way that matched the tone of of the bit Tosh was doing. Other women were there, quite a few I'd bet, and I'd also bet that a lot of them were happy Tosh quickly got her to shut her mouth.

[Committing a crime against] someone is a crime. [Committing a crime against] someone because they're [a member of identity group X] is a hate crime. Wow, this is such a tricky concept.

Must be, if you can't see your own damn logic. "I'm raping you because I hate women." Yea, I'm sure that's the reasoning most rapists use. It's never because they're drunk, perversely obsessive towards the victim, generally fucked up in the head, or anything like that. It's just because they hate women. By the way, you're still ignoring male rape victims.

Excuse the hell out of me for assuming that fans of a show that hammers in "friendship and understanding" like a jackhammer would also tend to believe in friendship and understanding.
Part of friendship and understanding isn't shutting people up with rape jokes.
I hate to say it, but it's like trying to take the piss out of a black guy with a lynching joke. You KNOW why you don't so it, and you KNOW why you shouldn't. If you do it anyway, then you're just a racist asshole. Same situation.

Actually Tosh seems like the kind of comic who WOULD take the piss out of a black guy with a lynching joke, so... I don't really see your point with that. He's offensive, that's his thing. He ain't the only one either. Are you going to crusade against every single comedian that makes jokes about rape? Or racist jokes since you also seem to have a problem with that? Because that includes... just about all of them. Do you hate comedy?

I like how your entire post has very little to do with the post you're ostensibly responding to (you're sure you're not an MRA?). Allow me to re-iterate. Please read more carefully this time around.

Fuck it. I'm done with you. You've left me in a position where the only thing I can do is repeat my previous post like you just did, and that would be stupid. I literally am unable to counter your last point in this debate because you didn't make one, so yea. I guess that's done then.
