Tosh makes a living out of provoking his audience. Most of his jokes are aimed at it. Rape jokes aren't the only offensive thing he's done, and probably not the worst, either. He kind of feeds on this sort of thing, and I think such an overt reaction was exactly what he was hoping for.

You can joke about anything, listen to the master on how to do so, I don't agree with how Tosh handled it but jokes are harmless if done correctly.

Rape jokes CAN be funny, in the same way that jumping from a 3 story window CAN be survived, it's definitly possible, but rarely worth it.

Well Daniel Tosh's main category of comedy is dark humor. Sometimes it delves into incredibly dark areas. Being offended at what he does is like being offended at Lisa Lampanelli for calling any man that looks even slightly effeminate a ******.

Its just what they do.
So because he uses 'dark humor' he's immune from critisism? Fuck how come no one told me comedy was that easy?
Dark humor is about making fun of tragedy. Saying Daniel Tosh should not do dark humor is like saying you can only do knock knock jokes without the knock knock part.

It defeats the point.
But he wasn't doing 'dark humor' he was being an asshole. I don't object at all to dark humor, when done right it's probably my favorite form of comedy. I object to the idea that because someone does 'dark humor' that you can't call them out when they're just being a douche bag or just plain not funny.

I think it's just as good a topic for jokes as pretty much every other thing that's horrible and shouldn't be funny at all.
The thing about how funny it would be if the woman was gang-raped is not exactly funny anymore though.

May I point out the question posed by the poll

""Is rape acceptable to joke about?""

And the OPs answers

"no
no
definitely No"

The answer, however, is yes, and anyone on this thread mad at tosh not because he sucks at his job, but because it happened to include the mention of rape, is wrong. You can say he did it badly, but saying you can't joke about rape AT ALL, is wrong. And unfortunately, that's the stance the OP takes, that you can NEVER joke about rape, and tosh should be punished for bringing it up. That's wrong.

agree?

OT: All humor has a target, and I'm in the camp that believes everything's fair game. And that's all I have to say, because your poll shows you don't intend to have a serious conversation about this.
Dear lord, you nearly made me laugh and wake my daughter...

Well this is the first thing I've seen of Tosh's (when Shrekfan246 linked one) and I liked it. So thread brought more advertisement. Woo, controversy about silly things.

You can joke about everything. Even rape.

That guy just isn't very funny. But I wouldn't be offended because he is so ridiculously over-the-top I can't imagine anyone taking him seriously.

Ok, why have a poll if your not going to have anything but 3 no's? because your opinion is obviously the right one?

What do you expect? it's daniel fucking tosh. that's not even close to the worst thing i've heard him say, its actually quite tame. she interrupted his stand up so he backlashed. he wasn't saying "it would be so funny if this woman got raped" he was saying "i couldn't care less about what you think, so now im going to take it to the next level"

Im not saying it was funny or right or anything like that, I like Tosh but i don't find this funny, its clearly in bad taste. what im saying is freaking out over him saying something like this is like freaking out over Johnny Knoxville shooting himself with a nail gun. Its what they do.

Oh god, I hope this horseshit doesn't go viral. Least deserving thing to go viral since ponies.

Some people need to grow a brain. Yes the comedian didn't sound like he pulled the rape jokes off very well, but the amount of butthurt over this is astounding.

Yes, rape is horrible, no one is trying to say otherwise. But if it's fine to joke about thousands of people dying, torture, homophobia, bullying, the holocaust, 3rd world kids starving, and other horrible things, why the hell is rape off limits? Because it leaves survivors? What about the families of 9/11 victims? What about torture survivors? More realistically, it's because sex-related stuff is still taboo in our culture. By NOT accepting jokes about it, YOU are propagating this taboo. Do you honestly think if a man hears enough rape jokes he'll get out on the street and rape the next woman he sees? By that logic, I've played a lot of GTA4 today, I feel like running over some pedestrians in real life with my car! You might as well join the goddamn "video games are evil" crowd. And if you want to pull the "THINK ABOUT THE SURVIVORS!" card, you sure as hell better ***** and complain next time someone jokes about car crashes.

By escalating rape to some off-limit thing, worse than anything in the world, you aren't helping anyone, you're being an idiot. Think for a second about your self-righteousness

EDIT: Also, your poll is amazing, nice work allowing people to share your opinion...

The people who find rape funny in any way have never actually seen and/or experienced it.
It's very hard to make a cancer joke when your friend is dying of it in the hospital.
If you make it regardless then damn, you must not give a shit about anything. Good for you.
Ok I am tired of people not being able to understand the duality of human nature.

I for one find most rape jokes funny, I would however not have a moral problem cutting every single rapists throat and watching them drown in their own blood in front of me while I held them, I wouldn't even blink.
There is nothing that gets my blood boiling more than rape, actual rape, not jokes, not depictions but real rape.

If I ever came across a rapist in the act I don't think I could stop swinging the nearest and heaviest objects against his head.

Yes, rape is a problem, but making rape jokes does not constitute hate speech.

Yeah, it was in bad taste, but he was well within his rights to do it.

There were people who signed a petition to boycott Oreo because of their gay pride advertisement. Neither will have a lick of effect.

http://thinkprogress.org/alyssa/2012/07/10/514002/daniel-tosh-gang-rape/

While making rape jokes at a comedy club, Daniel Tosh was told off by a woman who didn't that rape was very funny. He started making jokes about how funny it would be if she was gang raped.

So Tosh then starts making some very generalizing, declarative statements about rape jokes always being funny, how can a rape joke not be funny, rape is hilarious, etc. I don?t know why he was so repetitive about it but I felt provoked because I, for one, DON?T find them funny and never have. So I didnt appreciate Daniel Tosh (or anyone!) telling me I should find them funny. So I yelled out, ?Actually, rape jokes are never funny!?
I did it because, even though being ?disruptive? is against my nature, I felt that sitting there and saying nothing, or leaving quietly, would have been against my values as a person and as a woman. I don?t sit there while someone tells me how I should feel about something as profound and damaging as rape.
After I called out to him, Tosh paused for a moment. Then, he says, ?Wouldn?t it be funny if that girl got raped by like, 5 guys right now? Like right now? What if a bunch of guys just raped her??
Well, I'm never watching Tosh.0 again...
Then again, I never did...
Hope this shows up on Jezebel...
Really slimy move. Actually, this kind of reminds me of the Kramer incident...
Update: Well, did this story ever get big quick... HuffPo and Think Progress in a very short time! The wonders of social media!
Hmmm A title that blatantly lies. A poll with only one answer. This screams desperate troll. Seriously why do you care so much? Several members of my immediate family died of cancer but do I insult people for laughing at cancer jokes? No. Because I have the slightest sense of humor. Rape is funny, Aids is funny, cancer is funny, everything is funny in some context so calm down and stop making blatant lies.

I don't really see what the hubbub is all about.. It's only a joke, right?

Fine, it's okay if someone doesn't find it funny but that should be the end of it right then and there.

Having only ever seen a few snippets of Tosh's stand up (and, personally, I found it quite funny) I know that he has a lot of material that would be seen as touching on 'delicate' issues, in this case it was rape.

If you don't like that kind of stuff then why go to see his show? Why not save yourself the "emotional turmoil" of having to wince through his set?

Poll: is this poll stupid?
>Yes
>Yes
>Definitely yes

Fun fact: 100% of people that vote in this poll will say "yes".

(Apologies if someone already made this joke, I don't feel like going through twelve pages of this thread.)
