Kill someone over theft? No point. Usually just grabbing them is enough for them to panic and give whatever they took back. And even if this doesn't work, a material possession is not worth anybody's life.

To put this into perspective: if, instead of a pickpocket, it would be a mugger, and I can't run away, I would try to injure him. Not kill, but certainly injure.

If he threatens my life, and I can't safely run away, I'd certainly injure him, and hard. I'd probably go for breaking his arm.

If he threatens the health or life of a member of my family... He's going down. Violently.

EDIT: Sorry, the "violent theft" bit went over my head. I don't shoot. But I do defend myself, break a bone or dislocate a joint.

If he comes at me brandishing a crowbar trying to take my head off, I'll shoot him dead.

1) Pull out gun and warn the thief
2) Load round into the chamber, warn them again
3) Disengage safety and give final warning
4) Fire warning shot into the air, tell them to leave
5) Aim at them and try to hit foot

Honestly if it gets to step 5 the guy is probably on drugs.
You're way too nice, dude--sight of a firearm is all the warning anyone should need.
True, but if there is one thing I have learned about concealed weapons is that you need to warn the guy a few times if you don't want him to sue your balls off.

Short answer: No.

Long answer: No I would not, and are you cracked in the head? What kind of moronic psycho would shoot a guy dead over some tech gadget?

The responses to these threads are always an absolute joke. You invariably get a herd of nerds lining up to declare to the world what stone-cold killers they are. Like this one:

Unfortunately, that is still murder in Canada. I really wish it wasn't, I'd draw a thief's death out too.
It's all so very pathetic.

I would probably just let the Ipad go as soon as he started to use violence. I would feel very guilty if I had shot him and could have avoided it. I see no point in it unless he threatens to injure/kill me or anyone else. Plus I wouldn't want to get in trouble for it.

Don't have a gun, and if i did, the law won't let me fire it.
And if i was alowed to fire it, i might fire a warning shot. Even though it would ruin my ears.

Wouldn't shoot someone unless he/she (you never know) would physically threaten me or anyone around me.

I'd probably use a taser for more shocking results

If my life was in danger, then yes I would fire. If it was just my property I probably wouldn't.

Chances are, if you did pull the trigger, the thief would end up filing a lawsuit against you for attempted murder. Then you'll have to explain to the judge why shooting someone was an equal response to theft. It's safer just to hold him up and call the police.

As far as I reckon, the law should be changed so that when people enter someone else's private residence with the intent to steal, maim or vandalise - they should lose their rights as a human being. So yeah, I would make sure they'd never do it again one way or the other.

Shooting's perhaps a little too harsh, perhaps a quick club across the head with a bat'leth will deter them enough I reckon

Then you'll hear about alot of shootings where people have invited someone they don't like over and shot them saying its 'defence'. It's not that black & white. To be honest a taser would be far more effective, more entertaining, more painful for the attacker and you don't have the attempted murder issue (since tasers are classified as non lethal weapons).

I would probably threaten him or shoot at him. Not to kill him just to scare him so he gives the iPad back.

He can keep it for all I give a shit.

for serious though, I don't own a gun but if I also owned a gun and an iPad I would probably have a stupid ammount of money to be wasting it on shit like an iPad, so he can keep it.

Nah.
Maybe point the gun in his direction.
Or pistol-whip him in the face.
No need to shoot him.
Ditto, brandishing a gun is likely enough insentive for him to stop... I hardly doubt shooting a man for trying to steal your Ipod would come under self-defence.

hit someone in the foot, and chances are good they are disabled for life (if you hit a nerve, he might be paralysed). and boy, do you pay for someone that you disabled if he takes it to court ._.

OT:I'd probably threaten the thief with my gun, but I wouldn't fire it.
By that point it has become his fault, and honestly if you aim anywhere else you might ether hit an artery or vital organ, or worse missing and probably hitting someone else. Basically I told the guy 4 times to leave or be shot, his fault for not going away.
