Did it fail? It certainly did not fail. I for one enjoyed Black Ops, it is a great game to play, even with or without your friends. The Single Player is pretty great, but there aren't as many "WOW!" moments, which is probably why many of you don't like it, because of the standard that Modern Warfare (2) set out, with Russians taking over the White House, which seems reasonable on why you would hate it. But it's not a MW2 copy, it's much better than that. It might run on the same engine, but it's a really balanced game, each weapon has its own strengths and weaknesses, there aren't any overpowered killstreaks, and if there are, they're balanced so that you can do something to prevent that killstreak from getting the owner kills (like Rocket Launchers...).
The Currency system is great, buying guns for what type of style you have is great. I'd much prefer this over unlocking an MG, then a pistol, then a sniper... it's just... If we don't use them, why bother to get them in the first place? The ability to purchase perks at your own pace is great. I'd much prefer this over unlocking multiple perks that you can use, instead buying them to meet your needs. The Wager matches are a blast. It sucks when you lose, but you get an adrenaline rush when you play them (take for instance, One in the Chamber, or Sticks and Stones). You're playing for your own money, which makes you want to keep playing to get your money back if you lose.
Nazi zombies is fantastic. I love working with my friends to get to higher rounds. It's so much fun when you play with your friends and work together. They did an excellent job with the Nazi Zombies, everything's well crafted, from the part when you can hear your character talk when you press X on a portrait, to the musical easter egg you can obtain when you press X on all three meteors (which is a great song).
Overall, I'm happy with what Treyarch did with Black Ops. It's certainly a good game, and I don't see how it's a "fail of a game." It did much better than Modern Warfare 2; I haven't seen a modded lobby since the first day I played it, and I have a blast with my friends. I'm looking forward to the next Call of Duty.
