GTAIV was so heavily marketed, everyone bought it up in the whirlwind of hype. If I'd have relied on word of mouth to tell me about how great GTAIV was, then I probably wouldn't have bought it.

Unlike buying CoD4 from word of mouth, Halo (The first one obviously) from word of mouth, HAWX from word of mouth. These are games I thoroughly enjoy, but none of them heavily marketed.

No, it might be good in 2010.

When more than 50% of gaming population has the PCs to run it in Medium.

I never liked the GTA's except GTA 2, that was one of the most fun games ever, In my opinion, Fallout 3 should have it, Fallout 3 is fun, the combat works, has almost a hundred hours of gameplay if you want everything, and then you can play it again with another class.

Whey, I'm in the majority! GTAIV is fun for the most part, and the first online game in the series for consoles, but where did all the silly go? Only the radio and people are vaguely amusing, but even the humour pales in comparison to any of the prequels, in particular Vice City.

I don't know what all the reviewers were being slipped, but they entirely failed to point out the thing's major flaws. Even the multiplayer that I just complimented has the worst lobby system I've ever seen.

Well, I didn't think 2008 was that great a year for gaming, especially compared to 2007 (Bioshock, Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga, Time Crisis 4, The Orange Box, etc.), but I'd have gone with Fallout 3, with R6LV2 as runner up.

I personally prefer Fallout 3, and think that it was something *new* rather than just GTA3 with a bigger game world and a broken cover system. But having said that, GTAIV is a blast to play, even if I'm *still* stuck on Undress to Kill.

I'm still not bored of playing online... And causing trouble. The game seems to never get old, and you always play it when friends are round. Not sure whether it was game of the year though.

Hell no. There were so many other games that were a lot better than GTA IV. I don't see what's so amazing about GTA IV.
Examples of better games? I'm saying that GTA was the best, just wanted to know what game you think deserved the prize.
In my bad opinion, Persona 4, Dead Space, and Fallout 3 deserved it more. But that's just me.
Persona 4 and Fallout 3 i could at least see an arguement for , but dead Space?. I played and completed it but GOTY. its just System Shock 2 with all the suspense and storytelling removed

No!
But
That's funny because I put a poll up here (closer to the beginning of the year) about what game of 2008 was most overrated and GTA4 won (or should I say "was the biggest loser")by quite a wide margin; followed by Fable 2 and SSBB. So I can tell you right now that most of the escapist readers here will not agree with spiketv.

The thing alot of people don't get is that, while fun-wise other games (specifically Saints Row 2) were WAY superior to GTA4, CRITICALLY Grand Theft Auto 4 was, in the opinion of the "Man" network, the game of the year.

GTA4 had some of the best writing of any game in recent memory, and the story was better than most hollywood movies. For the period in which you played the story missions the game was a movie-esque experience.

Online was pretty fun as well, as I recall.

So we see that a GoTY competition held by Spike would pick the short-term, big budget game like GTA4 with online multiplayer (which is what many reviewers always wished for in a GTA game) would have swept the award. The "fun" factor, length, and replayability offline do not factor in.

I thought it was a good game, and that it gets a lot of undeserved hate from a lot of people, but I definitely don't think it was GOTY. Especially with the competition it had last year.

No. I bought it, liked it (and starting to like it again) but I saw plenty of flaws wich denies it's right on the title of GOTY.

Of course it did. It was amazing.

The graphics, physics, characters, story, everything.

I honestly can not understand what people are talking about when they say it's not "fun".
