So I recently replayed though Portal, this time trying to find all of the radios and complete the "Transmission Received" achievement and for the first time (I've played the game to completion a few times now and only ever found it funny) I was REALLY creeped out! Maybe it was because it was dark and quiet and stuff in my house, but something about the radio static combined with the ominous music and that feeling of isolation really started to get to me. Especially the sound the radios make if you vaporize them in those emancipation grids...

Am I the only one experiencing this, or has Portal given you a case of the heebie jeebies?

*Edit* I am specifically referring to Portal 1 (I haven't played 2 yet so I'm not sure if the same atmosphere applies) but if Portal 2 creeped you out don't be afraid to mention that too :D

There was certainly a theme of dark humor throughout the game, but I would not go so far as to call it creepy.

It's a game that mixes high octane nightmare fuel and some of the greatest humor you can imagine.

Of course it's creepy.

I suppose it is, a bit...
The lonely feeling you get from playing it gives you most of it I guess.

Well, the time when you walk on the conveyor belt, and a turret pleads "I'm different", I was seriously... well, maybe not scared, but moved.

And I really felt bad when I accidentaly dropped it into the void moments after saving it...

The only time I didn't feel a bit creeped out was when either Wheatly or GLADoS accompanied me.

I always enjoyed their company

Walking into the side holes with all the writing on the walls was definitely a bit unnerving, due to the LARGE contrast between the brightly lit inside of the compound, but that was about the only thing.

somewhere the backstory of GLaDOS is a bit creepy.
-SPOILER-
it,s a bit like the "and I can,t scream" trope for hundreds of years GLaDOS has been experiencing her death countless times without any way out.
Also the idea that they put some persons BRAIN inside of a computer forcing her to live forever and ever (possibly past the end of humanity) with the only companion being Chell (who is mute for the entire games).
-SPOILER END-
I never felt creeped out (maybe due to all the creepy pasta I read) Just some food for thought.

spoiler:

I was mostly laughing the whole way through but at the endong I was constantly thinking:
She is pulling mine leg, no way she going do that, where wil she strike....

The ending genuinely surprised me.

The last level of the first game was very creepy. The first few times replaying that I had to mute my TV because GLaDOS' comments always freaked me out.

It certainly has a.....unique atmosphere. Not creepy, just..... a heavy pervasive fog that constantly swirls around in the back of you're head.
Especially in the midway levels, when you're literally treading ground that has seen, neither sunlight nor anything resembling happiness for centuries. And it has lain dormant and undisturbed by human presence for so long, that it has developed it's own flavor of chaotic beauty that only decades of neglect and destruction can create.....
....
....
Actually, scratch that first sentence. It's creepy.

When you take what GLaDOS says literally and not just as a joke...

Yeah, the game can get unnerving at times.

She did mention seeing some humans. I mean, it is GLaDOS but a lie like that is so out of place.

It,s probably a lie,
she said she went outside which is impossible for GLaDOS (just look how HUGE she is!) she did to mess with Chell,s mind (to make her even more depressed) I think there are still humans outside Aperture though.

i think extra credits covered a similar point earlier, but both portal games have that strangeness about them, i find myself feeling a little uneasy while playing them, i know i dont belong there. freedom is your characters ultimate goal (or maybe cake) but you're not given a definite way to achieve it, you are subject to forces outside of your control.

these games work on many different levels, and i dont think its an accident that they do just that.
