Alright, I was just wondering which difficulty people pick in their games, this being the first one. Being an about above average player, I tend to go Normal unless under recommendation from a friend that the game is too easy/hard.

I do realise that some difficulties in the poll are missed out or not included in games but, I just decided to put down all that I know.

Update/Edit: Cheers for all the replies, from them, I am now officially going to play all my horror games that I buy on the hardest difficulty. (Omg... Fatal Frame(s) is going to mind rape me)

UPDATE: I realised that there is another thread that has been created today that is titled (Easy, Medium or Insane). Do feel free to vote and post on it (nothing is stopping you) but, mine was created earlier (so please, if you are so kind as to vote on mine too?)

I used to play on easy all the time when I first started gaming as a wee young lad, but now I almost always play on the hardest or second hardest difficulty. If the game has three difficulty settings, I'll play on the hardest. If it has more I'll start on the second hardest then move up. The only games I'm afraid to try the hardest difficulty on are Mass Effect 1 and 2.

I'll most likely start on Normal unless there's some unlockable for playing on a higher difficulty (Mass Effect, Devil May Cry 4) or if I know the game has a reputation for its difficulty (God Hand, God of War).

After finishing it on whatever Normal difficulty it has, I'll bump it straight up to the highest difficulty and beat that if there's an achievement for beating it (eg. MW2, Mass Effect 2).

Really? On my second playthrough for 2 characters on Mass Effect 2 I dove right into the hardest difficulty. Infiltrator and Adept, which was surprisingly pretty easy for them. Infiltrator, just grab the widowmaker anti material rifle and got for headshots. Adept just spams and ducks. I found it fun more than anything else :)

I play mainly as a vanguard, so combat isn't usually as simple as popping heads from across the map. I was thinking that if I ever do try to beat it on insanity I would do it as my soldier character. The main problem for me is patience.

I usually start with normal and wind up on Hard, but I have no patients so I usually give up half way on insanity.

Yea for vanguard and sentinel its alot harder on insanity. Then again, when its harder, you get more of a sense of achievement when you make it. Mind you though even as an infiltrator sometimes you do run out of ammo as the snipers have relatively low capacity. I would say the Adept is the easiest to play. I have yet to try the soldier haha (maybe one of the most popular classes?)

Depends on the game. For example i always have it on the easiest difficulty for Oblivion. Not because its too hard for me on hard, it just makes everything take ten times as long and is still just as easy. So i put the difficulty on easy. However i like to challenge myself with RTS's and will work my way up to the highest difficulty.

Depends, again, on the genre. I start most shooters on Hard, and if it's a sequel I usually start it on Hardest (if that's available).

New games, especially from genres in which difficulty is harder to spot I usually start on Normal. I remember Dragon Age: Origins being pretty damn tough on Normal. KotOR however was pretty easy on Normal. RPG's often all over the place, their difficulty is pretty hard to detect.

The only game I can recall I started on the lowest difficulty setting is Ninja Gaiden 2. And I still haven't finished it.

Always start normal, turn it up and down accordingly.

I like a game to be a challenge, but if i die every 5 minutes it would be a stretch to call it fun.

If I'm playing the game for the Story (RPGs etc) then I go on Easy. Other then that it depends on the game typre. FPSs I normally play on Normal and action games on Easy because I'm crap.

I start any shooter on the hardest difficulty and work down if I absolutely have to. I only really play shooters, it's what I'm good at and it's what I enjoy.
