I pick the default difficulty because it requires the least amount of button presses, so... normal I guess.

I usually play on normal and then jump ahead a few difficulties on my 2nd playthrough, if i bother getting that far.

Other times i just start on the highest difficulty and move it down a notch when it starts annoying me.

Depends on the game. Most FPS games (Except Arma II), I choose the hardest setting and go crack some skulls.

RPGs, I tend to go for slightly harder than average

And RTSes, I go for normal difficulty. I keep buying them, but I'm no good at them.

Hardest possible. I think its nice. But sometimes the games really really will not let you pass on the hardest setting. Then I give the lower level a go. But I usually play FPS so the hardest settings seems to be very easy these days. Not so difficult after all. But I am waiting a RTS to come out so I can play. The new Starcraft. Lets see if the hardest in that is hard to beat.

It depends.

If it's my first playthrough and I'm not familiar with the series, Normal.

If it's my first playthrough and I am familiar with the series, Hard or Insane (depending).

If it's Ninja Gaiden, easy.

I usually go with normal on my first playthrough, because 1, I'm not entirely sure what my 'skill level' is when compared to the majority of gamers, and 2, it's just kind of interesting to see what the developers consider to be "normal" difficulty. Then in my second playthrough I'll go for the hardest difficulty there is. Unless I know the hardest is going to be ridiculous, like extreme mode in MGS or something like that, then maybe I'll just go for hard mode, or maybe just not do a second playthrough.

Unless it's part of a series that I'm already accustomed to and understand the difficulty levels for. Then I'll probably do my first playthrough on a harder difficulty, or whatever difficulty I've found is good and balanced for that series.

I usually stick to one setting of difficulty in games that have "difficulty settings".
Most of the time switching from Normal to Hard or Insane or what have you just means that the enemies have more health and deal more damage and it takes more damage to kill them. The game isn't actually harder, its just more tedious.

Like Mass Effect for example...I've had multiple playthroughs but I only play on Easy or Normal. Why? Because increasing the difficulty doesn't improve gameplay or make it more challenging, it just takes longer to play and the game already takes forever to play.

I like the Resident Evil 4 approach where at least you find less healing items and ammo and there is a clear difficulty increase that isn't just proportionate health increases.

Beating a game on "Insane" rarely makes me feel like I've accomplished anything unless the AI actually change the way they react to you or the game itself has more difficult puzzles or something on that setting.

Easy, pretty much exclusively. I've mentioned this on previous iterations of this thread, but I don't particularly care about too much challenge. I want to enjoy myself, and I don't have the time to commit to playing a long-ass time to enjoy a good challenge.

(Not that there's anything wrong with challenge.)

I like to try games at their hardest straight away to see what the game can throw at me, if its a little too hard, i can always tone it down a bit.

MOst games I start on normal and play through roughly the first "level" as I deem it. RPG's I play for about 20 mins and restart if it seems too easy. If its Bethesda game, its an automatic "hard" though I have noticed. Their stuff is just way too easy.

I used to play with cheats on, when I was actually scared of getting killed in games. Now I'm a bit calmer (read: I manned up) so flick it on to hard to start :).

It depends entirely on what i'm playing. Most games i start on normal, but if it's a sequal to a game i played before or something then i'll most likely play on hard or whatever they chose to call what's after that. Guitar Hero i play only on Expert, so... It varies a lot.

Normal or Hard - In Horror type games i go for the hardest setting, since i feel thats how it should be; In FPS and TPS i go for Normal, in RPG's i go for Normal the first run, Hard the second.

To quote a good friend of mine when we started playing MW2 special ops: "As far as i am aware there is only one difficulty" Everything goes on hard. The only thing that doesn't is forza because i just aint that good to play it at that level. working onit though :)

To start with, I play on the middle or one-slightly-up-from-the-middle one. After that I normally play on easy for a while for loads of fun, then bump up to hardest if I like the game enough.
