A lot of DLC is complete bollox. People basically make it for free in their own spare time as a hobby and it is called mods. A lot of it should be in the game anyway. In fact the only company I have seen that has moderately decent DLC is Bethesda all the other ones are largely laughable. Although to be honest those are expansions and not DLC.

Depends. Call of Duty map packs are way over priced (which is why I quit after World at War), but things like the Killing Floor character packs ($2 for 4 characters) are fine. You don't need to buy them, and they won't make the game any less playable if you don't. I think that The Pitt, Broken Steel, Point Lookout (Fallout 3), Zombie Island, and Knoxx (Borderlands) were well worth the $10.

The problem I am seeing with DLC is that companies are now just skimping out extra crap in order for us to buy it. When i first heard about DLC I immediately squealed for joy. I saw DLC as a fix for all the games that get released unfinished, or missing whole levels, or just with bugs...ala KOTOR II (which purposefully forgot 2 levels and the end of the story when it got released).

Then like all things companies start to realize the money potential, and start cramming their DLC as pointless, useless add-ons. Games are still released unfinished...and the DLC barely address it.

It was a great idea in theory, but now has simply become another source of income for crap.

DLC isn't too much most of the time. I think 800MS points for an add-on pack for a game like Fallout is fair enough. However 1200MS points is way too much for a small map packs for a CoD game. Most people charge a fair amount for their products, however some overstep the mark.

I'm really just curious as to whether the Shivering Isles is worth 2400MS points.
I agree, having to pay for DLC that adds a pretty substantial story aspect to the game makes sense. But I don't think we should have to pay anything for new map packs. They never used to charge for them in the old days, and for the original CoD they made at least 5 new maps that I could think of. Plus, the new map packs in games usually tend to be worse than the old ones. Halo's map packs could've been made in Forge!

Most DLCs cost more than 5 bucks for 2 hours of game which means a 50 hour DLC would be priced: at least 125 Bucks.
So would you buy that?

Sometimes. I think that most times, DLC that costs 800MSP is fine (for game add ons), but 1200MSP is too expensive for me.

But free DLC is the best :D

DLC like that of NV is fine: you can buy it to add something to your game, or you can not bother and just play the game. What gets me is stuff like the Black Ops DLC which means you either buy it or lose out on the multiplayer experience (if your friends buy it and you don't, all of a sudden you've got nobody to play with).

My argument is on par with most others; if the DLC in question is either a decent sized expansion or some reasonably priced extra tidbits after everything's been said and done (Fallout 3, L4D2, and the first ME for example), then sure, everything's cool. Hell, I'll go ahead with the whole idea that there was no room left in the game itself to include such morsels (i.e. ME2, but there's no denying that most of the DLC sucks for that).

Unlock keys however, which is what a lot of fighting games have been doing recently (SSF4 being the worst offender of late), are a load of balls. Things like this are what make people say that the content should've been included with the game in the first place.

It depends. If its an addition that adds value and enjoyment, then it will probably be worth it.
If it just adds some crappy environments to do the same thing in that you have been doing all along...
Well, at that point it depends on the person playing.

I like good DLC. But when it is released alongside the game (half the DA2 stuff), or contains very plot relevant story (like I imagine the upcoming ME2 one will have) there is something seriously wrong and money-grabbing about it.

They should contain fun new missions, perhaps a couple of new weapons, and be totally independent. And never, ever, more then £5!

for me, DLC's are a way for devs and publishers to rip u off. i almost never buy any DLC's, and rather wait for an expansion. the only DLSC's ive bought are ones with good user reviews and multiplayer ones.

bottomline is, DLC's are bullshit. expansions ftw.

DLC only works when it's used to buy things like expansion packs or cool, but unnecessary "booster packs" to your game. I appreciate Oblivion and Fallout 3 for this, because it meant that I could enjoy the whole game on the normal budget and then spend more for more if I felt like it.

When DLC is used to buy things integral to the game, then it's really stupid. And it almost seems like everyone's doing that now. For example, "Oh you can't play multiplayer 'till you buy the $20 DLC to the game you already paid $70 for", or "You can play with the 5 weapons we start you out with. But if you ever want to succeed at the game, especially in multiplayer, you'd better buy the other 15 weapons!"

Im normally quite positive on DLC. Even when publishes do it ain a kind of douchy way, I buy games based on comparing the content they offer versus the price. If its a good ratio I buy it, and if later I want to buy the DLC, then I have to admit that the publishers know how to set a reasonable price for content. If I feel like a game is a rip off without including the DLC, then I don't buy it. Its not like there arn't games that offer too little content for there price without DLC. However, I do not buy aesthetic DLC or all but the most extensive and varied of map packs. Black Ops multiplayer let me kill a few hours, and though I do love Zombies, 15 bucks is just too high. Id say its worth 15, and I can wait till a sale, if then.

Map packs for $15.. what a rip.
Less than two hours worth of content for $5-15.. hmm, maybe if I really like the game.
More than two hours worth of content for $5-15.. well worth it since I paid $80-110 for the game in the first place so the price doesn't seem so bad, so if the content seems worthwhile ill definitely pick it up.

Nothing beats the good old expansion pack though, or waiting for the GOTY or complete editions to be released.. if you have the patience for that.

Generally yes, it's all a ripoff. You rarely get anything that is actually worth the scratch.

vote with your wallet, stop buying worthless DLC or important elements of game that have been purposefully held back to become DLC.
Anyone who buys it supports gamers being short changed by incomplete games, or being ripped off by worthless overpriced DLC

Only DLC i agree with in theory is to breed new life into an old game thats still popular

Not usually. Most of the stuff I care about is 10 at most. Except Bad Company 2 Vietnam, And that was totally worth it.

We all know what DLC is here, If you don't get out of my thread, and on the xbox it costs a fair amount to buy the game, then all the DLC (if you want the new maps and stuff)
So, riddle me this: is DLC too much or am i just being a skint student?
Its only a fair amount on xbox?

lol

No, its fine as long as its good content. i.e, shadowbroker for mass effect 2 and then the undead nightmare for rd:r

EDIT: i also think bad company 2: vietnam was really good

Easy solution:

Don't buy the game right away. If you wait about a year and a half the GOTY or Complete set may be out, netting you the game and all dlc for a much lower price.
