To me; it isn't how realistic the graphics are, but how they're stylized. In Psychonauts the designers created a style around the pixely drawbacks of the Xbox. Graphics weren't one of the issues of that game, and I still enjoy playing it to this day.

Graphics are an important part of a game we do actually need to see what we are actually doing.
Graphics like Mirrors Edge or Borderlands do a really good job of expressing the feel of the game and make them stand out from the crowd.

I think we're at the point where graphics don't really need to get any better - art design, storytelling, gameplay, character building...
Says you. I say never stop advancing till we are playing inside cyberspace a la Neuromancer. Then I will totally satisfied.

Graphics don't matter. I still play my old 2D games, and many of those are better than some modern games.

I'm a sucker for pretty graphics, yet I have utterly hated some of the best looking games out there because the gameplay was inferior... Assasin's Creed, Far Cry 2 and Prince of Persia 2008 to name a few.

Cookie for anyone who can spot the link between those three...

But I can't imagine I'd have spent 200 hours plus in Cyrodil and the Capital Wasteland had they not been so gorgeous to look at.

Ubisoft? Do I get cookies?

I also agree with having Bethesda games to good to look at. I love just climbing to the top of a mountain and staring off into the country side. That is just awesome.

I'd LIKE to say I could play any game as long as story/gameplay were good, but I know I'd be lying. I stopped playing Deus Ex because it looks like garbage with today's standard.

However, if a game has really good graphics but shit camera/controls or the likes, I'll stop playing it, so... yeah.

Yes, because gamers are (mostly) human, and humans are shallow, shallow creatures.

Graphics can really help a game, but they certainly aren't necessary. Graphics are just another piece of the puzzle that can really make a good game.

I still play sports games from the 90's, I recently played through pokemon again, the old super mario bros. is still fun, and none of them have assassins creed level graphics.

On the other hand, some games do need the graphics, I've also recently played some old fps games on the xbox... honestly I don't know how we played those on split screen. Some indistinct blob off in the distance that seems to be flashing, whether that's a friend or foe was largely and exercise in shooting them and seeing if anyone complains about team-killing.

Whether I enjoy a game or not often comes down to it having one feature that I enjoy, if it has something I like, it can make up for almost any flaw. As long as you can work out what is going on.

To paraphrase Winston Churchill; Although personally I am quite content with the graphics we've had up to this point, I feel we must not stand in the path of improvement.

PS. Churchill was talking about explosives

I'll take Banjo Kazooie/Tooie, Mario 64, or Starfox 64 any-day over their next gen counterparts. Does that answer you question?

If the graphics distract from the gameplay, I don't like them.
Likewise, if the graphics are trying to excuse for poor gameplay, I just don't like the whole game.

Here's my opinion with graphics:
If a good game has shit graphics, oh well. It's still a good game.
If a good game has good graphics, rejoice!
If a bad game has good graphics, throw away the piece of trash.
If a bad game has bad graphics, throw away the ugly piece of trash.

The graphics in a game are what set the mood of a game but if the gameplay and story are good then sometimes it just makes the graphics work. You dont have to have amazing graphics like Gears of War 2 to make the game good for example Crackdown doesnt have amazing graphics but the comic book style of graphics with things outlined in black or sometimes white still make the game look good because it suits the game.

This. Most of the modern games we play today depend quite a bit on graphics. Bioshock wouldn't create the atmosphere that has made it so well known without its graphics. Half-Life 2 wouldn't have characters so well-liked without good graphics. Yes, the older games were able to get by fine with graphics that are by today's standards, rather poor. However, more and more is now expected from video games, and as the stories and designs get more and more complex, the graphics have to match.
