For me Graphics matter to a point.

I played games where people claim the gameplay is complete and utter shit, But I enjoyed it.

This is Crysis then. It's just awesome and I want more of it. Then people get a bad game like Far Cry 2 and claims it's REALLY GOOD. Seriously? What is wrong with those people?
Far Cry 2 is really bad, it needs some major fixing before it can be classed as GOOD. If you like it, you have low standards.

So far, Far Cry 2 is like the only game recently where it's graphics where better than the gameplay.

Bioshock, Prince of Persia, Assassin Creed, Bionic Commando Rearmed and more where all fine for me. They where fun to play and story was fine to in all of them. Bioshock being the best out of those.

Graphics do matter. I like to relate to the main character and I find it quite hard to relate to the anthropomorphisation of my pre-school block stacking projects.

what do you prefer?

Well.. I only perfer the top one because the bottom one is wrong. Crisis Core was a fabulous game, but FF7 was just better.

I have looked this graphics problem and I have come to a conclusion that on the PC new games with better graphics come with better controls, but on consoles the controls are very much different and players dont't feel the difference so much. As am not in the group playing SNES sometimes and saying "Wow Mario is the best game ever", I'll just say "I care about storyline until the controls are good."

Id say graphics are just as important as anything else in a game. Im quickly sucked out of a game if the guy has square hands. This is especially true with Deus Ex, or something for the PS2. I cant get into that game no matter how much good i hear about it, because the graphics and shitty voice acting draw me out of it.

The graphics in a game are what set the mood of a game but if the gameplay and story are good then sometimes it just makes the graphics work. You dont have to have amazing graphics like Gears of War 2 to make the game good for example Crackdown doesnt have amazing graphics but the comic book style of graphics with things outlined in black or sometimes white still make the game look good because it suits the game.
You said it. The Megaman games, for example, is quite charming with their simple 8-bit graphics. It wouldn't be quite the same with SUPER AWESOME HD 3D-2D GRAPHICS YEAH!

Of course, that doesn't mean Fallout 3 doesn't become more awesome with it's wide-open landscapes and extremely good graphics.

I honestly can't take that twat seriously when he's holding a sword that big. It's beyond ridiculous.

Also, I kinda figured this thread was about graphic quality in the modern age. Like, the people who dump on Fallout 3's graphics, comparing them to such visual feasts as CoD 4 or whatever.
Rather than comparing CoD 4 to CoD 1...

Sorry, I've got cod on the mind (haddock too)

Says you. I say never stop advancing till we are playing inside cyberspace a la Neuromancer. Then I will totally satisfied.
Cyberspace can't be immersive if all of the characters have such poor dialog as seen in the "Master of unlocking" scenes.
"Master of Unlocking" scenes? What ever are you talking about?

Graphics are just as important as gameplay and storyline for me.

Seriously, when I buy games, I go to EB, pick up a game that looks interesting and think "Wow, this game has really good graphics" I then go home, look it up on wikipedia and find out if the gameplay is actually worth the 100 odd dollars I'm about to sift out of my bank account. There are very few games I get seriously hyped up about and I've found every one worth it... at least I think they were.

Bad example, dude. I normally enjoy the newest graphics, but I reminisce about PS1 pixel graphics, especially FFVII's. Nostalgia can be a pretty powerful force...

As long as I can tell what's what it's all good. Recently I played the conduit which (apart from the guns) has pretty poor graphics but I absolutely loved it. Stories not great either but I think they've got shooting on the wii down

As an article on the Escapist mentioned, games that mainly rely on their graphics never stand the test of time as time passes and their only redeeming quality has been rendered obsolete. Games with good gameplay on the other hand are still played today. Hell, people still play NES games whereas they soon dismiss a game that's been released less than six months ago.

Graphics are like fashion which is ever changing with its appeal. Therefore while they're a good factor in regards to a game it shouldn't be its anchor.

I know I'm just making a point.

If you were shown two screenshots of different games, and you didn't know anything about the game besides what you see in the picture, you'd prefer the one with better graphics. Obviously graphics are no indicator of quality of story or gameplay but you'd still pick the superior graphics because it appeals to you. Saying graphics don't matter at all means you wouldn't care in the least if all the games of the current gen reverted back to PS1 graphics.

I know, they're both fantastic games but I was just referring to the graphics.

I think that graphics need to go hand in hand with story, gameplay etc.
In my opinion a game can achieve many things with appealing looks, but if if the rest of the game isn't up to snuff it won't help at all.

Graphics are nice, but cannot excuse poor gameplay.

This is my official stance on the matter.
Graphics aren't that important, but I do expect a new game to not have shitty graphics.

I'll take crap graphics anyday if it means good gameplay and/or storyline.
I don't think anything can beat this statement, this is what a true gamer would say.
