Something sudden that just looks bad because there's no fluidity to the way it loops? Annoying.

That! Right there! That pretty much summarizes my feelings on it. Choppy animations that don't loop well are distracting when I'm trying to read people's posts. Grrrrrr...

There's a guy here with an avatar of a fly crawling around your screen that gets me every time.

I even hit my screen once in front of my parents out of reflex. They gave me strange looks.

Not normally, would largely depend on the .gif, I quite like a few, the hypnotoad one that I've seen around for example.

OT: Yeah, I love them. I don't like all of them, but the same can be said about regular avatars. Special mention to lacktheknack, his old .gif avatar was marvellously weird.

I love .gif avatars for the most part, from what I've seen a good portion of them are funny little things designed to make you laugh or something. Nothing wrong with that.

I like 'em, usually. Some that don't loop properly bug me the first couple of times I see them, but I get over it.
I'd say about them being more interesting, but since mine barely moves, that seems a bit pointless.
